Frozen or Inoperative Door Latch During Freezing Temps ***TSB 16-0155***
#171
It is interesting that the TSB says this issue may only affect "some" vehicles. Would it be "some" vehicles that only experience freezing temperatures, or would it be all vehicles that experience freezing temperatures? I wonder how random this issue actually is? I just found this thread (got the truck new a week ago), and I live where the temperature goes below freezing and I seriously wonder if I will be dealing with this.
I would be concerned with buying any used 2015-16 F150 if it came from a southern state as I would expect the issue once you hit the colder locations, more so if out of warranty at 8+ hours billable.

Looks like i'm another lucky recipient of the frozen locks. My rear passenger door is intermittently unresponsive and i am unable to open it. It seems to go away once the truck has been driven for a while or it warms up. Also today my tail gate wouldn't open. I had to lock/unlock it several times before i could work it loose by yanking on it hard enough that it felt like the handle was breaking.
I took mine over for them to look at (and the drivers door wasnt working and they did see that) and have not heard a word from them. He acted like, well it is cold and it happens to every car or truck. I am getting a little worried about unlocking the door with the key though, seems like I am going to break the key off one of these times.

Add me to the list...
those of you who had the TSB performed, was the issue resolved or am I just asking for more frustration?
This now in addition to the freezing windshield washer, also backordered, has left me a little frustrated and questioning what won't work when it gets cold.

I’m here to help! Please send over a PM with your names, phone numbers, VINs, current mileages, and servicing dealers. Let’s see about getting the locks working right!
If you are located in Canada, please make sure to reach out to my colleagues at FordserviceCA with the same information. They’ll be happy to see how they can assist on their end!

Just got a call from my Service manager at the dealership that my door parts came in this morning. I told him about the TSB for the frozen windshield washers and he emergency ordered me the replacement hose. Drop the truck off Wednesday to hopefully be repaired completely on Thursday. They are checking into the tailgate latch freezing issue but there's nothing they have on that yet he says. He took my case number for that and put it in my file.

My locks froze three times last week. In one instance, I unlocked and opened the rear door, attempted to close it and the door would not latch shut. I used a bungee cord to hold it shut while I drove to work. The other two instances, I could not roll down the window to show an ID at work after driving about 4 miles from home, opened the driver's door from the inside to show ID and the door would not latch shut while closing the door. I used the same bungee cord trick to hold it closed while driving another 4 miles to work. The temperature was below freezing (high 20s) in all three.
The dealer stated to bring it in when the doors are frozen to verify. Good luck on that one since my dealer is over 10 miles away.

That's just like saying they don't believe you which is ridiculous. I'd find another dealer. Like you, it's happened to me three times. My dealer they'd do the TSB for it. Just need to schedule it and they would provide me a loaner for the day. In the meantime, what seems to work for me is to remote start it with the heater controls set to defrost and feet (leave the center vents off) and blower on high. After a few minutes, the door locks have warmed up enough to not stick.

Take a video and throw it in their faces. Jackass dealers.

I had the TSB done on all 4 of my doors on December 1 and it has not corrected the problem. The dealer had my truck for roughly 4 days. I initially dropped it off in mid-November and the dealer told me that they could not replicate the problem and that since no TSB existed at that point, they weren't going to be able to do anything about it. When the TSB did come out (thanks tmcolegr), the dealer did agree to perform the fix on all four doors. The doors still freeze and lock up to where I can't open the doors at all.
I returned to the dealer for a third time yesterday to tell them they need to fix this and I showed them a video of my mom trapped in the backseat and having to crawl out through the front. I got into the backseat and recorded myself using the key fob locking/unlocking, engaging the handle multiple times and lifting/closing the lock manually and the door still would not open. Believe me when I say I am not amused at this point. Since I'm in my truck by myself most of the time I don't know if the back door is faulty until someone is back there and they become trapped and then it becomes a problem.
I told the dealer that they know damn well that they would be pissed off too if their elderly parent was trapped and the only way they could get out was by crawling through the front two seats.
Anyhow, long story short I am taking my truck back again on Jan 4 and supposedly this issue (my truck specifically) will be getting more than the usual attention and that they are going to consult with someone at Ford when my truck gets opened up. I'm in Michigan and 20 minutes from Dearborn so it wouldn't shock me if they sent someone out to look for themselves considering the TSB work has already been completed and it did not fix the problem.
I contacted Ford Service when I took the truck in the second time and they seem to be interested, but they have no real authority to do anything. They just call and ask if the dealer has contacted me. Not much more than that.
I have uploaded the video for those who are curious. Sorry about not shooting in landscape. It was midnight after picking up my mom from the airport and I wasn't really thinking straight. And yes, the child locks were off.
For a $65K truck, this is absurd. I shouldn't have to worry if the doors will open. I appreciate everyone's feedback on this issue. It is making me feel less crazy knowing that others are going through the same issue. The dealer has told me that I am the only one complaining. I find that hard to believe since they are the largest Ford dealer in Michigan.

How could Ford screw up door latches, a basic component, so badly? Seriously, I'd like to know.
