Ford's F-150 Cost Cuts: 2015 to 2018
#71
Never really understood the need for heater or cooled seats. Wife has them but I really don't care for it. I guess my butt doesn't care. The 2017 is a trimmed down model, exactly what I've wanted to keep payload high. Cooled and heated seats costs you in more weighs (see what I did right there?) Than one.
I told myself years ago my next truck would be a base version to give me the payload I need.

I don't know who made the system but it was attached to a Recaro Seat that I'm guessing is for an AUDI. The liquid is not water it's similar or probably the same as the liquid cooling fluid used for computers.

Trucks with cooled seats used to use a TED - don't know if that's another name for a Peltier cooler, but it seems to operate the same way. It surely was different from the Ventilated seats that just blow some air thru your seat.

As far as I know there is no DOT certified peltier cooler system for automotive seats. There are some aftermarket install items like the video posted previously.
As I understand it the peltier cooler system takes significant electrical loads for the cooling capacity needed and requires protection from thermal runaway. I suspect the bigger issue is they don't meet DOT needs for fire safety. I know of no factory installed peltier cooler in a seat. cupholders yes - seat covers no.
There are 2 aftermarket install systems for heated and cooled seats that I know of - one is marketed by Katskinz. They use the peltier cooler because aftermarket install on a seat without the ventilated foam would be difficult without it. Factory seats have holes in the foam and in the leather cover to let air press through the seat. Notice there is no factory optioned cooled seat that isn't also perforated covers with perforated or matrix foam.
If you did have wholey foam cooling a seat would become difficult and the install would be that much more. I'm not very successful on the search fu but so far in the parts tree search I've found the seat elements in a ford product. OH heated seats - those are electromat heaters which have a temp sense loop and thermal overload protection. Also when punctured which is part of a DOT seat test - they break the connections locally and are electrically insulated. So they can take the damage and protect the occupant. Peltier cooler plates as far as I know are still doped ceramic and a bit fragile.

As I said above I sit corrected. They are terribly inefficient and somewhat dangerous so I'm surprised they bother to use such a system. I've not seen one in a seat before but then I don't own many fords and only indirectly work with ford. The one I'm most familiar with used a ducted AC line to the seat with a pusher fan in the seat.

To be fair to the Ford diehards, I thought I’d also share a couple positive changes they made:
- Sync 3 (as it’s been discussed) is much better than MFT
- Front cup holders are soooo much better!! Can finally hold small water bottles.

It must have been more of a 2017 to 2018 thing because my 17 has all the things my 15 had!

Ford used this system in the Lincoln LS and T-Bird from 2000 to 2006. It worked nicely initially, until the duct in the seats collapsed restricting air flow.
