Ford, get rid of that useless 23 gallon tank and the useless low axle ratios
I'm finding that dealers only stock Crew Cab 4WD 5.0l trucks with useless 23 gallon gas tanks and 3.31 axles, even a 3.55 is pretty pathetic.
For people who use these trucks like trucks, both of those have got to go. If I can't find a truck with a 36 gallon tank and a 3.73 locking axle, I won't settle expecially when Ford raised the price of these aluminum trucks $5500 over the old, for the same options.
A 23 gallon tank will leave me out of gas on the long runs where the next gas station can be hours. When I tow, I don't want to be stranded with the family. Also the 3.31 axle is great for grocercies, not towing. If I wanted a vehicle for groceries, it wouldn't be a truck.
End of rant. Please have some common sense when selling TRUCKS.

Ford does it for people like me. I'll never use my truck anywhere near it's designed capacity. The 3.31 rear-end and short bed are all I need. I did get the 36-gallon tank because I like to fill up once every couple weeks. I just wanted a nice truck for commuting, the weekend Home Depot runs, and pulling my Scag Turf Tiger on a trailer. My 2012 Lariat 5.0 pulled a small 5 x 10 trailer about five times...not exactly taxing work. Ford knows what they're doing by offering the varied configurations. They make trucks for all you manly-men doing the tough stuff and other less-capable trucks for us suburban, weekend warriors.

Get ready for a lot of butt hurt people, theyre very sensitive here when you question their choices in trucks. Anyways i had this issue, finding a truck exactly how i wanted so i ordered one. Still waiting but its only been 2 of the 6-8 week wait.

ok...
i dont know where you tow, but even here in boonies country, the longest run without a station is ~150 miles (unless of course you tow 150 miles in the bush away from the main road, in that case you need gas cans, not a bigger tank!)
I have the 3.73 and 36 gal tank. I really use the 36 gal tank (as in, it's nice to have the extra) about 3-4 times a year, and the 3.73, well, never... I would have been perfectly fine with 3.31 or 3.55 for my use.

I've been in places where I've come close to running out with the smaller tanks on other trucks, and those tanks were 26 gallon and 27 gallon. The 3.55 axle is a requirement to even having fair towing capable and the 3.73 for having more towing ease on hills and in wind.
Why would I buy a truck that can't even compete with what I have already, that's ~$6K more MSRP for only a few more years newer?!! The truck only gets 1 mpg better than mine and that loss of 13 gallons isn't made up by the measly 1 mpg.
I would hope that someone wouldn't get Butt hurt, it's common sense when towing, hauling and using the truck for it's purpose.
I was hoping that Ford would read this and put some sense into the powers at be.

We hear your rant Mike Up but there is nothing Ford can do about it. It's the dealers that order the vehicles, not Ford. Unfortunately most of the dealers aren't truck savvy and just order them all the same for convenience sake. They read somewhere that tall gears get better mileage so what customer wouldn't want that? Also they figure the customers would complain of $ 100 fillups of that big tank and give them bad reviews. Seriously, this is why they are mostly ordered the same. Crazy.

I have an ecoboost with the 3.31 gearing and it tows and runs perfectly. Gets great gas mileage, and thanks to the higher gearing with the turbos it can outrun any 3.73, and possibly 3.55. I also have no use for a larger size tank..
Most people don't use their trucks as trucks, and are more concerned with gas mileage than 0-60 and hauling capacities. So the 3.31 is perfect companion with their 5.0 motor.
