Ford f-150 - Engine choice??
First off, I have been a silent reader on this site for a better part of a year. I have gathered a lot of first hand info from everyone that contributes and it's been very valuable, thank you! I do a fair bit of towing, 5500lb ski boat, 6000lb flat deck with JD tractor etc.. I originally had a GMC 5.3l which was the absolute worst for towing, any type of grade and the engine sounded like it would blow up. My wife refused to drive in the truck while we towed the boat, because she was convinced it would blow up. I currently have an 09 Platinum with the 5.4, it certainly tows better than the 5.3 but just marginally. It too bounces around gears uncontrollably.
I am currently in the market for a new F150, and am pretty convinced the 3.5EB is the truck. It has the torque for pulling and the general driveability I'm looking for. However, there's a lot of chatter about the 2.7L which I never really considered ( my ford sales guy is steering me in this direction too), and guys commenting on the 5.0L with the correct gearing. Help me out guys, as I'm looking to upgrade within the next few weeks. Appreciate the help!

Any of those motors would be fine, just make sure you get the 3.73 gears.

I just bought a SCrew 3.5 EB 10sp 3.55 with max tow package. Have not had a chance to haul anything so can't comment on that, but the truck has a ton of power. I'm sure it will pull great. Very happy with my purchase.

if you have been lurking for a year then u should have a good idea if what each engine brings to the table. Leaving the 5.0 aside since u appear to ask about the 2.7 v the 3.5, you likely know that they perform similar with a mpg benefit with the 2.7. The 2.7 will out tow the 5.4 or 5.3 you had hands down. The 3.5 will pull it even easier. In fact i was laughing at how easy it pulled my 25' heavy chaparral the firsg time. So if you want mpg w/o towing, 2.7. If you want the best engine for towing, then go 3.5 and leave 1-3 mpg in table when not towing. Remember most engines are similar mpg when towing. I have owned both and you cant go wrong.
Can't hardly wait to tow with new 3.5.

I know what you mean about the 5.3! What a dog! I couldn't get rid of my 2014 fast enough, it wasn't anything like my 04 was. I'm tired of GM and their "real people, not actors" commercials and their crappy trucks, so I came to Ford. I hope GM goes broke again actually. No sense in putting out crap and charging the moon for it like they do.
