Ford may intend on dropping the 3.5 at some point for the 3.0, especially when the all-electric F-150 comes out. Or there is a (very slight) possibility that the 3.0 engine may be offered in the ranger in coming years or possibly even in the bronco.

From the C&D review of the Lincoln MKZ:
I would look no further than cost, as to why the 3.0 uses aluminum vs. CGI. CGI is probably not needed in a car/SUV application, for durability reasons I suppose.
"Enter the 400 Club
Yet, despite the preceding sarcastic bluster, there’s some new mechanical substance under the newish MKZ skin. That’s in the form of a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 with direct injection and variable valve timing that, at least for now, is exclusive to Lincoln. Related to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost turbo V-6 used in the 2017 Ford Fusion Sport, this V-6 (labeled 3.0 GTDI, as Lincoln doesn’t say “EcoBoost”) gains displacement via an increase in cylinder bore from 83.0 millimeters to 85.3 and a stroke lengthened by 3.0 millimeters to 86.0. Also, whereas the 2.7’s block is cast iron, the Lincoln’s 3.0 is aluminum."I would look no further than cost, as to why the 3.0 uses aluminum vs. CGI. The difference?
Well, the 2.7 is the CAFE engine, intended to help the fuel economy average.
It’s a teeny 165ci engine.
They are in no way the best engine for a F150 unless you never tow/haul or work it hard.
Of course - if the hardest thing you do with a truck is to climb your driveway it’ll probably last as
well as the more expensive engines.

Towing a boat to the lake? The 2.7 will whip that 2-5k boat around anytime you can make it to the lake.
Towing a small TT? It has no problem towing a 5k TT on the 1-12 trips a year that you go camping. Most camp less than 5 in my experience. If it is properly equipped, it can tow a 8k TT.
If you are towing a 3k trailer 5 days a week? Go for it, but the 3.3 is probably better for you cost wise. Ya know businesses like saving money.
If if you are towing 8k, 5 days a week, well you should be driving a Superduty.
Yes, the 2.7EB is the best engine in a regular half ton pickup. Peppy driver, great towing in the 2-5k range and can be equipped to tow 8k which is hard to do without the HDPP. And it gets 2-3 mpg better than the 3.5EB in every application.
Bigger is not always better. I think we have proved that by 2019.
Good of luck and happy camping.

I would have bought it in 2011 if it hadn't been $750 more than the V8.
But I never would have bought a 240/6 in a F100 either. I would have had the 390.
IMO you can't take a 165ci engine and work it like a Cummins Cargomaster Diesel and expect it to last.
Plastic Oil pan? On a $36k truck? No way!
