Default Ford Bed Extender for 2016 models

I purchased stowable bed extender from dealer. But once they installed I noticed that it did not fit in as expected. What I understood from various videos on the internet is that the extender when sitting on the tailgate should fit in to latch easily. See photos (Extender6.jpg & Extender7.jpg). In order to latch it, I need to disconnect both sides, latch it and then connected the other side with the latched side. Dealer said that is how it is supposed to work on 2016. Videos on internet show the connected extender latching on tailgate without need for disconnecting the two sides. Is this an issue with 2016 models?

On my 2013 it fit like that too. If you just push a little when it is connected, it should fit into the hole.

They did this so it has tension on it when you push the peg through. Otherwise it would bounce in and out the whole time.

x2. I looked at mine yesterday and it is just like that. The one time I used it, I didn't bother with the pin though.

It does not go in by pushing. The only way it latches is if I unlock right side from left side and then latch it onto the tailgate.

Reading your responses I know I am not alone and that gives me some comfort. I was under the impression that some fittng was wrong. Thanks to all who responded.

Mine does the same thing, but you just have to push on it. No need to unlatch anything. It's built tough so you can push hard on it. It flexes enough to move the pin. At least on mine it does.
