Amen on the flimsy, hard-to-read dipstick. I changed my oil yesterday, let it drain for 15 minutes, and very carefully added exactly 6 quarts of oil. After the truck sat overnight with the dipstick out, I dried it completely and checked the oil. It was hard to read the dipstick, but the oil level was just slightly above the 'full' hole in the dipstick. I'm not gonna worry about it...I know it has the correct 6 quarts of oil in it...I'm thinking the dipstick isn't exactly precise, but a close approximation of 6 quarts.

Until you run the engine and the filter absorbs oil, you cannot get an accurate reading.

I've been changing the oil in my own vehicles (and others) for almost 55 years, so I'm aware that this must be done...also run the engine to make sure there are no leaks.

However, there might be some on here that are unaware of this...hopefully, they can use your information to help them better take care of their f150.

^^^^ just remember with the 2.7 after you run the engine to fill the filter and check for leaks you MUST wait at least 15 minutes to check the oil or you will get a VERY false reading.

I prefill the filters on all the vehicles in my stable...been doing it for years. It's not necessary, but just an added attention to detail.

Since the 2.7 filter is a canister type, I soak the filter prior to installing it. Somewhat surprisingly to me, it absorbs 12 ounces of oil

Seems like a messy step which is totally unnecessary on a 2.7 as the filter drains down every time you shut the engine off note there is no spill when you remove the filter

What's messy about soaking a new filter in a container of oil, then draining it for a couple of minutes while you're inserting the sump drain plug? The soaked & drained filter is then inserted onto the stem and the housing installed as normal...no mess, no fuss.

2.7 should not drin the oil from the filter when switched off, there is a drainback valve in the filter housing that prevents this to reduce oil starvation on startup. this is why they say to remove the filter first when changing the oil. as you screw off the cap it lifts up opening the drainback valve letting the oil run down to the pan
