How else would this logically happen?

Actually you know what. The more I think about this the more I think its a result of the recent tornado's down south.

I bet this truck was in the tornado's path.

Whether it's true or not, this is why you never swerve to miss animals. The deer, dog, squirrel will be the softest thing that you hit. And after all, they're just animals...

"heavy square object"

It couldn't have been too heavy if it was square. The really heavy objects are spherical.

So a new bed was painted for this same guy last year from the pic that was shown. If true he is clearly abusing his vehicle and has never learned the importance of securing a load. I would never swerve for a dog, that's just silly.

Not securing a load in your truck bed that has that capability for damage is stupid no matter what. Same goes for the earlier talk of someone that didn't secure engines they put in the bed. Unless you are just moving it between buildings in a parking lot or whatever, it's stupid as hell.

Take the material of the bed out of the equation, and you still have a tailgate that while it latches, isn't designed to have 500+ lbs slammed into it suddenly. Even if it survives it a few times, the latch could fatigue or have a flaw in its construction causing a failure and then you have 500+ lbs dropping into the road potentially directly in front of another vehicle.

If it weighs more than 50-100 lbs, and sometimes even if it's less, tie it down. Stuff like this is why companies have to put warning stickers like "Don't use toaster in bathtub".
