Set up an account, log on, and indicate that it can be left without signature...

Yup, been that way for quite awhile. USPS shot themselves in the foot when they farmed out their package delivery service to UPS years ago. Now they are trying to get it back without having postal clerks do the work as they are trying to downsize all the time & use computerized machines for everything. As far as damaged goods, I was in the Motor Vehicle Service & delivered from the plant to the various post offices. A lot of times I would find a damaged package, or something completely broken waiting on the dock for me to load it. Most of the time when I reported it to the dock supervisor, they would say to deliver it anyway. Pretty sure it`s the same at all the delivery companies.

The last signature-required shipment I got (a SmittyBilt 12k winch ordered from Amazon), I didn't have that option. I ended up paying $5 to have it held at the depot until I returned home from a trip...which ended up being a bit BS, as the package was still on the truck the next day when my roommate was home and the delivery driver handed it to him.

Shippers apparently have control over that option. Every time I've bought from Canon direct (Canon cameras), the option to not sign was greyed out or wasn't there. In fact, I couldn't even divert delivery to the FedEx office until after a certain number of delivery attempts took place. Ironclad policy, but a PITA. With such vendors, you have to plan your purchases for when you know you'll be home.

I hope they make it right. It almost sounds like the fedex guy stole it.

One time I ordered 5 tires for my jeep, and the UPS truck showed up and wheeled four tires off. I asked where the 5th was. He confirmed there were five, but searched his truck and the 5th wasn't there. Trying to figure out still how they lost a tire, but they did. Ended up having to file a claim with UPS, and about 15 days later a replacement tire showed up. I still wonder if they ever found a random tire at the warehouse.

I think that FedEx sometimes uses contractors to do the final delivery (not the postal thing described earlier) so that might be something to consider. I would think (but I think a lot of things) that they'd be liable and have full bonding and all that before FedEx would consider contracting with them. But stuff happens.
Regardless, someone owes the OP his product or a full refund.

Good luck getting it in one piece etc. Yes sir growing we used to leave the doors unlocked even when we went out especially if we were in the back yard working etc. Can't do that **** no more........Having said that I guess I'm lucky here in rural ontario canada I get all kinds of courier packages they just leave them @ the back door....never had a problem....Our biggest bad deal here in ontario is Canada Post I've been waiting for an expedited parcel from British Columbia since Dec 26th when it was shipped...it's now Mon. Jan-08 & it's been sitting 25 mi. away since Fri. night....but they say I should get it tomorrow ,???

USPS scanners will show a GPS location of where the package was dropped off. Although USPS does deliver both Fedex and UPS packages it's usually nothing as big as a tonneau cover. I don't even think it would fit in the back of a carrier's truck (LLV).
