Default engine performance and 80 mph

Hey guys,

So I've been working with a local dealer on a 2015, but wanted some feedback. I live in an area that only has interstates 75-80 mph and 20 mph average wind. My 5.4 doesn't handle it at all ( tranny wont stay in OD on flat road)so I'm asking to get experiences from those with the 2.7eb, 3.5eb, or 5.0 on driveability in similar conditions. Thanks

The 3.5 ecoboost will downshift the least of the group. 5.0 and 2.7 would be pretty similar, but I would guess the 2.7 would downshift slightly less than the 5.0.

i did about a 1200 mile round trip pulling a small lightly loaded 6x12 enclosed v-nose trailer averaging about 80-85mph and got right at 8mpg avg.

Nothing special

This is in a '14 though so take it for what its worth.

My 2012 EB could handle 80 mph and 20 mph headwind all day long without down shifting. Of course the mpg would suffer going that fast with a headwind but it had no trouble doing it. I would expect the same from a 2015.

I don't know why you think an engine with less horsepower and torque would downshift less, the correct order should be 3.5 Eco, 5.0, 2.7, With the 3.5 NA downshifting the most. I would order 3.55 or 3.73 gears (whichever is the highest number available on the truck you are ordering) to minimize downshifts. I have 3.55's in my 2013 5.0 and it rarely ever downshifts, even while towing. 2015's should be even less likely to downshift.

IMO, the turbos may be the best options. However they may very well stay "spooled" up really reducing MPG's. Since the 5.0 makes its power higher In RPM's it may perform pretty equally or better on fuel. Driving the truck in sport mode should make a difference also. The only way to really know is to take each of them for test rides if possible and "feel" it for yourself.

I don't own a new 150 yet, However, I have test drove the 5.0 and the 3.5 in the new models. I also have experience in these conditions pulling and unloaded with my duramax. The wind drag and overall weather conditions are going to vary the outcome daily. The 2015's are very nice and way ahead of the 5.4 in performance.

Depending on where the hp and torque are, it could be true. I haven't seen any dyno on the 2.7 yet to make a determination. The real question is which one has the most torque at 1800-2200 rpm where we cruise? The 5.0 has 387 tq at 3850rpm, the 2.7 has 375tq at 3000 rpm so it certainly isn't out of the question.

All the current engines will be better than the 5.4. But the 3.5 Eco has the most power by far low end through mid rpm. Assuming the same gearing, the Eco will shift down far less and have more power at the ready while the 5.0 will shift down and rev a bit to get to that power-but it's there. The 5.0 will be the same as your 5.4 at 2k rpm while the Eco will have tons more torque... 2.7 would likely out power he 5.0'at lower rims as well... but we haven't seen dyno comparisons to confirm.

I think the 2.7 makes at least 90% of it's rated torque between 1700 and 4500 RPMs.
