Hello all,
I am new to the forum, but have been a reader for a long time. I have 2017 F150 Platinum SuperCrew 4x4 with the 3.5 Ecoboost. It has 46,xxx miles.
I have seen this issue mentioned in the past, but no one seems to have an answer.
I occasionally pull a smaller camper that weighs 6200 loaded. I noticed that if the turbos kick in for 10-15 seconds that the coolant temp will shoot up to 235-240 as soon as I let off of the gas. This mainly occurs after reaching the top of the hill. The temp will then return to normal within 10-15 seconds. I have a 10 spd, but I will lock out 8th, 9th, and 10th gear. I average around 3000-3500 rpm doing this.
Now for the fun part. The truck has started doing this without towing anything. If I am on the interstate and go up a hill, it will drop down to 8th or 9th gear, kick the turbos in and then shoot up to 232-234 after I let off the gas at the top of the hill. I have had it at the Ford place 3 times for them to look at it. Of course they cant re-create the problem. The computer is not throwing any codes, and the coolant has been flushed and replaced. No leaks anywhere. None of the hills that I am talking about are steep inclines. This is just normal I-85 hills in SC. With the camper, I dont travel over 60 mph, and it does this while trying to maintain 70-75 mph with no load.

The turbos do not "kick in". The turbos are always doing their thing if the engine is running. I think what you are hearing is the electric fans kicking on to move more air through the radiator.

I do hear the fans kick on, but when I say " the turbos kick in", I mean that I am watching the Turbo Boost gauge go up to 5-10 psi and then return to 0 after reaching the top of the hill. Take a look at the videos.

The turbos are water cooled, so anytime you are in boost your temps will definitely go up. Radiator can only exchange so much heat. Your temps are not out of line with what eco users see while under boost.

Are you saying that everyone with an Ecoboost has this problem? Even with just normal driving down the interstate with nothing behind the truck? That doesn't seem right.

I know several people who pull campers much larger than mine with an Ecoboost and have never seen this problem. And certainly haven't seen it with just normal driving

IMO you should not see those temps without a load.

The graph gauge (dummy) isn't moving all that much.... Its the numerical temp number that will drive you crazy.
My Eco does this too with LiveWire gauge hooked up with numerical temp values. Meanwhile the graph gauge just fluctuates a tiny bit if at all when the number spikes.

I personally think that is the reason Ford doesn't have the value above the graph gauge as so many people would "freak out" watching the spikes...
I presume you activated this feature via FORscan or did 2017's have this from the factory. My 2018 doesn't have it. (Platinum)

Also in one video you have only 35K miles and the other its 45K... I guess you have been worrying about this awhile.

I purchased the camper back in August (at 35k miles) and thats when I noticed it. IT just started doing it without a load in the past 2 weeks (46k miles). I notice the fans kicking in at lower speeds, they are really loud.

I didnt sctivate anything on the temp gauge. It comes on automatically when the temp goes above 225 degrees. You are right, the dummy gauge doesn't move at all. It has been bothering me for months. Everytime I pull the camper I have to feather the gas going up hills and even have to occasionally downshift by locking out another gear. Its like driving a manual.

Its really got me down on the Ecoboost.

Doesn’t seem normal to me. I dont go over 214 without a load. And the fact it only started happening recently indicates something is going on.

yea this is true, also the gauge is linear to a certain point, then if the engine overheats it goes full hot and enters fail safe cooling
