it's a combo of the 3.5 and aluminum. the 5.4 has more power than 5.0s down low but 5.0 will rev faster and build far more power as rpms rise. the eco will always have power in spades. the difference is even more dramatic when towing..

+1. I have a '17 3.5 and 10-speed. The 10-speed has really low gearing and the ecoboost has very good low end torque. In fact the new 10-speed with 3.31's is effectively as low in 1st gear as the old 6-speed with 3.73's. It feels... peppy sorta like a small car with so much low end power.

I think the 15+ 5.0l trucks feel 1000x better than the 11-14's...
I truly like my ecoboost more, but I still love driving the 15+ 5.0l/3.73 combo

That's the feeling I got. Wasn't a bad feeling, just way different than I'm used to. Probably the shocks too. A Bilstein upgrade will be one of my first mods.

You might be right on what I was feeling. I actually have 5100s on my 2010 and it feels more grounded that the 2018 I drove today. The 5.4 can't get out of its own way, but once it gets going, it move along at a pretty good pace. I did jump on the 3.5 for a short burst and you're right, no comparison.
The Ford gal that was with me put the truck in "sport" mode. Not sure I liked it, but not a whole lot to go on.

out of sport mode you probably wouldn't notice it.
Shaving that weight off the wheels is fairly significant. I mean 700 ish lbs of a 5500 lbs device is more than 10%. Give or take a bit.
ALso I don't know when it was implemented but the 2017 I have - has AL front suspension pieces. Which surprised me at first. Turning radius is maybe tighter - but also the new trucks have EPAS - Electronic Power Assisted Steering. So electric motor provides steering assistance to a rack that has I think tighter ratio. The motor provides variable assistance for speed and steering angle. in our 2017 it's one of the smoother steering trucks I've ever been in and feels that much more like a car.

In January this year I traded from a 157"wb 2012 5.0 Lariat I bought new and drove 100,000 miles to a 157"wb 2016 Lariat 2.7.
The new truck feels much lighter on it's feet than the 2012. I also feel like the new one doesn't ride as well as the 2012....specifically the rear hops around on bumps.

My 07 5.4 was a dog. As far as more power? Not even close 285 vs 385 I think it was.
