Default Door Ding test.........kinda

As a former Cobra owner I still visit SVTPerformance.com and they seem to have the inside track on new Ford models. Well the site owner got a chance to make this video.........

During the 50th Mustang Celebration in Las Vegas, NV we found a 2015 F-150 parked next to a 2014 F-150. That gave us the idea to perform this impromptu unscientific test (we tried to apply the same amount of force on both trucks in the same areas of the doors) of panel strength. Needless to say, the 2015 F-150's door skin is far more "stiff" than the 2014's. This is due to the alloy of aluminum Ford chose for the 2015 F-150 and the increased section thickness of the panel compared to the outgoing model.

Glad they are thicker. I'm excited to see the 2015 in person.

GASP!!!! THEY TOUCHED IT!!!!!! Someone call someone!!!

So it doesn't flex as much...big whoop. It'll bend when something big hits it. Theres still a lot of real world proving ground to cover. Aluminum will either work..in which the other makes will follow with more Aluminum....OR it will be too cost prohibitive and problematic to justify its use. In which they will switch back to sheet metal and there will be a generation of soda can collectors items on the road.
Time will tell.

Less flexing in my mind is rather a big deal. I find it a bit unsettling to slam a door in a current version F-150 and see not only the door panel ripple but the box panel rippling all the way back to the wheel well!

Seeing that the truck will go on sale in the fall, so manufacturing will start pretty soon, real world proving should be done by now. Ford will live or die with their decision to use aluminum, whether is flexes more or not.

I was actually surprised to see the current gen have as much flex in it. I don't think Ford wii regret this move. But like you time will tell.

Many car makers have already been using aluminum bodies without issue, including Volvo, Audi, Jaguar, ACD Porsche.

Not worried myself.

You do know that Ford has had all aluminum body trucks out in the real world testing for the last two years. They put current body style trucks made of all aluminum bodies and let people do everyday work with them. Now Ford did not tell the testers that they were aluminum. In one of the videos Ford stated the above and they also said that they have been testing aluminum for over ten years now.
