My 2018 5.0 does this and it's very noticeable in parking lots. Need to get in to see the dealer and see what they say. I will be bringing video with me.

Anyone ever contact Borg-Warner direct and ask them for a solution?
I believe Cloyes also makes front end engine parts for Ford/

I modified the calibration to fix the noise. My truck is tuned and has been for a while, but either way, this sounds almost like a characteristic noise for this VCT system, but it can be alleviated greatly by modifying the calibration. I know no one or almost no one is going to be willing to do that, so chalk it up to this explanation.

The amount of cam movement when going on and off the throttle is an emissions and fuel economy thing. That's why it moves so much. Going from a very very low overlap scenario at light throttle when cruising to a larger overlap scenario in decel.

I definitely agree on the principles of operation for emissions reduction but I don't believe the noise is an expected characteristic. When listening to the video at the top of this thread, that is clearly the chain hitting something. A chain should never have enough play that it makes that noise. A VCT actuator will not make a ratcheting noise nor will the solenoids, at least not if they are operating as they should...and it sounds like they are according to comments you made before. Rapid VCT movement is normal...but it should never cause the chain to lash. Honestly, Ford has been using a similar calibration for a long time without a problem. I believe the calibration is causing movement in the system that is not being compensated either by the tensioners or the arms (could be reaching the limits of their movement for example)...and there's probably some degree of stretch happening as well. Modifying the calibration I think just masks the real issue.

Wondering if maybe specifying which engine this applies to would be useful. There's only 6 choices (more if you count the Raptor Ecoboost) in that time frame, with updated versions of two of them in there too...

No vehicles I have ever bought had this characteristic, including this F150 3.5 L ecoboost (it only started rattling after about 4000 miles), and there's clearly enough people that claim they don't all have the rattle. I didn't want a engine with this rattle when I bought it and I don’t want one that sounds like this now, so it needs to go back to being quiet in order for me to be satisfied. I did notice all the turbo/wastegate sounds and thats fine. its a machine for gosh sakes, common criteria for engines to run smooth enough with limited NVH ie no bothersome rattling, and Im not a mechanic that can just buy the parts off warranty and replace whatever needs it down the road.

PS Is your calibration fix harmful to the engine? Seems to me less rattling would be a good thing. would be good for Ford to consider the calibration fix.

First off, that is god awful.
Secondly, I don't know if this was meant to be an Eco thread.

I wanted to ask the guys that don't hear it in the cab, but can hear it when the hood is open...
Is it definitely the VCT or internal for sure?
I know my electronic coolant pump makes the exact same noise but it's faint. I would never hear it with the hood closed, but maybe some are just louder.

I took a video trying to find that off throttle pop, but ended up hearing that instead and I never knew it was making that sound.
I suppose I'm lucky, that I don't hear it.

My answer is to get a ESP because I plan on keeping my 2017 for awhile. There's no freaken way that noise can be a good thing regardless of Ford BS. If/when something breaks in the engine I don't want to eat it a few years down the road. I have the noise (it's fairly faint) but I can darn sure hear with on/off throttle response especially when the engine is cold. For now I'm cranking the stereo up because I've yet to read where a dealer has really fixed the problem. I really don't want them tearing into the engine unless there is a specfic TSB from Ford on how to fix the problem. If this is best Ford can offer sadly this will be my last Ford product.....

Mine has had it since mile 1 and we now have 14,000 miles. Very noticeable in company parking garage only on cold start drive out. Had the TSB performed in late December that updates the ECU. Trans does shift much nicer, but the on/off throttle rattle seems unaffected. I'm trying to train my self to release the throttle much slower as I round curves in the garage. If you are careful you can completely avoid the noise, I know it's not a fix. I thought I read somewhere there was a variable runner-type mechanism in the intake manifold that was swiftly adjusting itself in this on/off throttle phase. That seems more plausible than the timing chain concern some mention. The conditions and sound are so precisely consistent... seems timing chain noise would not be so consistent. Just an opinion.

Nov 17 build, in service Dec 17. Dearborn Truck Plant.
