Disconnecting CAC shutters... wil I get a cel?
#11
In the case of the CAC shutters I believe the main goal is to increase MPG a bit, the downside is that you will have hotter IATs and the turbos will have to work harder. I am just willing to get a little more power consistency out of the truck for that slight loss in MPGs.
But I could be wrong.

I donīt think I can ever know more than them regarding this truck, what I do know is that a production vehicle is made of compromises to reach certain goals.

Correct me if I am wrong. I was under impression Ford put these in, to prevent condensation build up in the CAC and water ingestion leading to hesitation/limp mode.

As long as 2017XLT doesn't find it, we're probably ok. LOL
Here we go again.

That is one of the reasons. Active shutters serve multiple purposes. Certainly fuel economy is one but thermal management is the other. In cold weather after a cold start closing the shutters allows the engine to warm faster. Oil and transmission fluid work best at operating temperature. The shutters also aren't just open or closed they can be put in 16 different positions. How much they are opened is determined by coolant temp, intake air temp, ambient temp, oil temp, transmission fluid temp, air conditioner demand, speed, and air flow. The CAC shutters of course includes turbo boost pressure. A lot more than a infrared gun and a hand. If you live in a cold climate your shutters are probably closed the majority of the time, the computer uses the electric cooling fans to regulate engine temperature. Another advantage over old school clutch fans.

UPDATE...
Removing shutters will not throw a "hard code" which is a CEL in your dash, but there will be a "soft code".
You have two choices for the soft code you can get:
Lost communication with shutter motor, which happens when you disconnect the shutter motor from underneath the bumper and back.
No shutter endpoint, which happens when you remove the shutters but leave the motor connected since the motor cant find the open or closed position that is dictated by the shutters.
What I did was the following; disconnected the motor AND removed the shutters, that way you get the most airflow and the motor wont be running constantly looking for the "end point" of the shutters, if you leave the shutters and disconnect the motor only, there is a possibility they may close with the turbulence with no way to open, so I recommend at least removing the shutters
I did find the CAC stays very cool even when driving harder, but I cannot tell if the power consistency has gotten better yet, although the turbos have to be running a little bit more relaxed which is good in my book. I suspect to see the best results of this mod will be when towing or going over a steep incline.
MPG cannot tell a difference but the radiator shutters which are the biggest ones are still working as intended since they are controlled by a separate module.

James Cole....you are most certainly donna drive yourself nuts over this . . . .
Now when you go in for service, you gotta put the shutters back on....
