In a Different Realm
Hello.
I've purchased a couple new F150s before and I've been on this forum for a few years so I feel pretty well prepared when buying a new vehicle. MSRP/Invoice/Discounts etc. I am pretty familiar with and comfortable navigating around.
My issue now is I am considering getting back into a 1/2 ton and I am thinking about buying a used F150. For example, there is a nice Lariat SE about 4 hours away. It's a 2017 with ~1000 miles on it still on the lot. What I need help with is where do I stand on negotiations? Based on the listed price, I could probably get a 2018 for the same/similar price, especially when you add in rebates/incentives. Are those rebates/incentives still there on a previous model year truck? How do you get the truck down to a price that you're winning but not offending them?
Perhaps I should just try for a new one to make it a little more clear and put me back in an arena I'm familiar with.
MSRP is $63. I think it's listed for $53 so they are showing a 9,xxx dealer discount. The new 2018s are showing the dealer discount (albeit a little less) then minus rebates, etc.making them comparable.
I'm not completely sold on just this truck but for future reference when shopping, what can I do?

3 F150s I claim momentary insanity. Should have been 1, 2 at the most.
The SD I needed for work and I had a commuter car. I don't need the SD anymore and I would like to help my recently retired brother out by giving his daughter my commuter when she turns 16 this July.
That puts me back in the hunt for a F150. I'm just not positive I want a brand new truck and I'm on the fence about the looks of 18 vs. 15-17. I just really don't know how much I can offer/save on a year old truck that aside from dealership driving it around has never left the lot. If its only a 3-4k difference between that and a brand new one then I'll go new every time.

I have read the 10 speed issues and the leaking oil pan issues. I am without a doubt, happy I got the 2017 5.0 with a 6 speed. To me, its the most refined option of the 13th gens. No direct injection or 10 speed, no plastic oil pan, no sunroof, no IWE's and limited electronics since its an XL. This truck should serve me well for the next 10 years.

Save the Manuals!
If you are on the fence I would go drive a 2018 with the 10 speed. It’s far superior to the old 6 speed IMHO.

Current incentives are viewable at https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/pri...nd-incentives/
I didn't see any incentives on 2017s. Do those exist or is it just dealer discounts at this point for that model year?

If you ask them about the price and tell them you're on the fence about getting a new one which is about the same price, it shouldn't offend them, it's just reality... I'm sure they're well aware that their asking price isn't something that they're going to get, but they'll still try.
However, they'll probably drop it quite a bit to get the customer. You either drive the 4 hours there and buy their used truck, or you just buy a new one locally and they don't get a sale.

Interest rates are what got me to go with an '18.
Not sure where you are but interest rates on used cars are no where close to what you can get on a new one.
I was looking at a '16 but the rate was 6.99%.
On the 18 I got 0.9%.
I would have paid close to 8k in just interest on the 16, and I'm only paying 16xx over a longer finance period with the 18.
This brought the pricing so close that it made no sense to go with an older vehicle, with higher mileage, and less warranty.

Good point for most. Not really applicable to me. I can get 2.0% on used through the credit union and 1.9% on new. Out the door price is my biggest concern. I just don't know how low they can reasonably go. I'd assume the best they can get if they don't sell it is auction prices but I don't have access to that.
