The main differences:

Diesel holds twice as much oil, maybe 3x as much depending on what you are comparing, so you end up spending alot more in oil when buying 15qts vs 5qts.

Oil filters are a little more, maybe, but minimal.

Fuel Filters need to be change every 15k miles or so, some say 25k, doesnt matter, you have to change them every so often. 60 bucks give or take.

DEF is minimal cost compared to all this.

Injectors and glow plugs.. if you dont have a warranty for this, get ready to drop some dollars.

The biggest problem with newer diesels isnt really the emissions stuff itself, its how they handle it. As soon as there is a misfunction, the truck goes into a "limp" mode where you only have like 100-200 miles to drive until the truck shuts down and wont operate. Which is the bs most people hate. It literally leaves you dead in the water.

But they do this because the emissions systems havent been perfected, and driving around too long with a broken system could lead to major problems. Catch 22 I suppose.

Also, in general, the repair bills for diesels are WAY higher than gas engines. For example, if a fuel pump goes out. In a gas truck, few hundred dollars. Diesel, could be 5-6x more depending.

I am considering all the facts i have owned diesel trucks in the past. Your payload will be nothing. You will pay much more for fuel and maintenance and u will be able to tow the same amount of weight, with fewer people in the truck. Go ahead and report back to us in a year....
I said "teens" when towing. low to mid 30's unloaded.

I would buy one. And with the lightweight of the F150 I would not be surprised to see 30 MPG highway. Heck, my 7.3 Excursion got 23 highway after mods and a tune way back when.

Smurfs... you are about 10-15% high I think, but still... what you are saying is true I think. It DOES have its place.

That or a 4cyl turbo gas truck that can get 24-25 and do the same thing. I posted that somewhere on here, but that piece of the market is really looking for one thing:

A truck that will get 25+ mpg and still tow around 5-6k lbs. Look at all the tacomas that sell. If you could drive a f150 that got the same mileage, why wouldnt you?

I knew parts were higher. Since the EB is direct injection, are the injectors priced similar to diesel injectors? The oil change and fuel filter cost doesn't seem like it would be a deal breaker.

The limp mode would be a deal breaker lol. But the 5 grand or so upcharge for the diesel when you buy it plus the higher cost of diesel vs gas always seemed like it would negate the better fuel mileage in my mind.

Still, if it was a really stout engine, fun to drive, got great mpg, and lasted forever I might be interested. Think old Isuzu Pup, except stouter and in an F150 lol. I guess those days are gone.

The longevity of diesel is where the higher buy in comes from. If you are a guy that trades every few years then a diesel is not for you but if you plan on owning truck for a long time, diesel might be the way to go as 200,000 is just getting broke in for a diesel.

Don't forget that ecoboost also goes into limp mode when something goes wrong, it's just the nature of the beast and prevents blown motors.

I've had Isuzu, Mazda, and Toyota diesels in Japan. All but Isuzu 4 cylinder turbos. That Isuzu was the best engine! My last was a '99 Toyota turbo diesel 8 passenger van. Got about 30 mpg highway and diesel is cheaper there. GM Duramax is partly or maybe wholly built by Isuzu, so I'd trust it. I'm beyond the need for a diesel here now. Ecoboost is the ticket I think
