Since we drive trucks that tow and haul, I want a better oil that can stand up to the heat. 5W20 is like water. It's only used solely for fuel economy and CAFE ratings, not longevity.

You also have a 5.0, and the recommended oil is 5w20. The discussion is about the correct oil for a 3.5 EcoBoost.

I went back to the dealer today and told the SA that they put the wrong oil in the truck. He seemed surprised and I reminded him that I questioned the 5w20 on the invoice when I picked up the truck last week. At that time he assured me that it was correct. He checked the oil filler cap which said 5w30 and looked at the invoice that said 5w20. He said it was just a clerical error but they changed the oil again to be sure.

The funny thing is, over the weekend, with the 5w20 oil in the truck, I took a long trip and got 28% better gas mileage. Just kidding.

So, according to your logic, if Ford uses the 5W-50 in the track pack Mustangs because lighter weight oil can't handle the stress, then the 5W-30 you are using is junk too !!!

Please don't post BS like this. It serves no purpose and is dead wrong. I put 168,000+ miles on a 2004 Lightning (heavily modified) and never had an issue - period. The new owner is driving it today without issue, with over 185,000 on the odometer. EVERY oil change in that truck was done with 5W-20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend and a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. I know because I did all of the oil changes.

I suppose you know more than the engineers that designed the engines and the engineers that design the oils that Ford specifies for engines that have a warranty associated with them ??

This is what has happened to me three times now.

On the point of sales systems used by ford the 5-20w oil change comes up first. They click on it and off it goes. I've caught it at checkout three times now, the last two times they called up the actual tech who performed the service, he said caught the mistake and put in the correct oil. So I still asked and got free oil changes out of it. Btw the last two mistakes was made by the same service writer. His supervisor showed him how he was making the mistake. We'll see at my next oil change.

My son has a 3.5 NA and it specifies 5W20. I would imagine this is where the techs are getting screwed up,

Techs should not get screwed up. When they open the hood they see right there on the cap 5W30. This is why people do not trust mechanics anymore and started doing oil changes on their own.

5w20 and 5w30 are so damn similar anyway. I doubt there'd be any negative effects. Even 5w30 shears down to 5w20 pretty early on in its life cycle.

Especially with the direct injection/fuel dilution problem with the Eco. If I am not mistaken my 14 Eco originally was 5W20 and but was changed to 5W30 due to the dilution problem. The 5W30 was diluted to way less viscosity than 5W20 after as few as a few hundred miles (as per oil analysis). I am so relieved to not have that headache anymore.
