Dash cam options
#23
I did a lot of research on this topic and the old adage holds true; you get what you pay for. A cheap Chinese dash cam will give you cheap Chinese performance. South Korea seems to be the dash cam powerhouse at the moment. Blacksys, Blackvue, and Thinkware all hail from the non-governmentissuedhaircut half of that peninsula and are all very well reviewed. Thinkware was previously the king for Apple/Mac users but the latest versions of Blackvue and Blacksys have both come even with the Thinkware (keep that in mind if you're buying a old/refurbished unit on sale).
I have great experience with the Blacksys 2CH dash cams. I put a CH-100B in my wife's Mazda5 back in July and liked it so much that I bought the new CH-200 for my F-150. I only bought the CH-200 because of the improved video quality over the CH-100B. I disabled all the driving aids so I can't speak to their function. With the sales at the time of purchase it was only ~$75 difference and the 200 came with a bigger memory card.
I hard wired the wife's car with both front and rear cameras right away because I was adding a bunch of other electronics at the same time. My F150 is still on the cigarette adapter and I haven't gotten the rear cam in yet but I'm sure it will be just as flawless. The hardwire kit came free with the cameras and allows you to use the parking mode.
The Blacksys has a wide range of customizable settings and has also proven to be one of the most heat tolerant units available which was very important here in sunny South Florida.
Like any dash cam, they need maintenance. The SD cards are only really good for about a year with the continuous writing/rewriting that goes on and should be reformatted ~once a month. It seems tedious but when that important event happens you don't want a recording error because you were lazy.

Rather than start a new discussion, I will try to resurrect this one since it isn't very old.
I'm looking into a dash cam myself, and I'm noticing that there are a ton of them out there. Does anybody have an idea as to what is good and what is junk? Any features to look for? Can a good one be had for under $150 or would I have to spend a lot to get something decent?
Are there any good sites that have run test/comparisons of various models out there?
Thanks, all.

I purchased the A119 as well in early 2016 after doing a ton of research. I wanted a screen, a capacitor instead of a battery, HD, GPS, and something easy to remove if necessary.
Here's a link to one of the videos from it, transitioning from dark to light. areas.
