I have some Sandisk USB drives that I got from Costco that look like that, and they are SLOW. I would never use them for an update. Sandisk makes great stuff in general, those weren't though.

I've updated multiple modules using a fast 64gb drive formatted as FAT32, not even empty, and have never had a real issue.

For someone that isn't very computer literate... kinda proud of myself for figuring it out. lol

EDIT:

After spending the last hour going through the 3.0 update I have found it to work perfectly. I use carplay/amazon/usb sticks for my music. Works great. Gracenote is working perfectly with not pop ups as well. 1.1.1. 1139 NA0010

The best part FOR ME is it has added the heated steering wheel Icon to the home screen. I didn't/don't want the seat icons on the home screen as I've just always used the buttons directly underneath. Haven't been able to have just the HSW Icon without the Seat Icons displayed as well. Now just the HSW Icon is by it's lonesome on the home screen. Really happy about this.

Build 17194 - Nav NA114

Also, My Sync 3 replaced Sync 2 that came with my 2015. Bought the unit from Texasfording and installed approx. 6
months a go. Unit has and is working flawlessly. Nav 3.0 Update complete and working perfectly.

Thanks to all.
6+ weeks with 3.0 and it couldn't be any better. FOR ME, it is a considerable improvement and working flawlessly.

I guess my question is why does it work for some and not others? At this point I would never go back to 2.3.

What brand was this "fast" thumbdrive? And you have them formatting to FAT32 versus exFAT that Ford says to do, with no issues?? Weird.

It's not the fastest but fast enough. Patriot 64GB spark series. It's a pretty fast reading drive by a little while ago's standards. Maybe not today. Way faster than my costco Sandisk usb 3.0 drives from about the same time.

Yes FAT32. Unless you have a file larger than 2gb, which the sync install does not once it's uncompressed into the usb drive, you don't need exFAT. All of these infotainment units can read and mount FAT32, otherwise they'd have trouble mounting some media devices.

Edit:
I have some much newer/faster Samsung usb drives, but this one's on my keychain and has been "ole trusty" for my sync installs ... I didn't intentionally format it as FAT32, it was already that way when I re-purposed it for my sync installs.

I even have a different directory on the USB where I moved all of 2.2 while placing 2.3 in the main directory ....

I believe Ford included exFAT because it is the only format supported for read and write by both Windows and Mac. Fat32 is the go-to format for windows usb drives.
Most of my usb flash drives and portable external drives are exFAT so I can use then on my Hackintosh.

exFAT is just the name for 64-bit FAT instead of FAT64... it's not exactly that simple, but close.

Just read up a little more on it. Wonder what they will call fat128? After all this fill system is now over 11 years old!
Anyway I'm glad ford implemented the use of exFAT rather than HFS that is now being replaced with APFS in High Sierra.

It seems like Ford's exFat support is still not fully cooked though. When I use a exFat volume for my USB "jukebox," it only shows the volume's UUID instead of the name. Right now I am still using NTFS, which properly shows the volume name, and Paragon's NTFS for Mac software to support NTFS on my Mac.

Yes I remember it showing the UUID when I had version 2.0. It seems sync version 3.0 fixed that and it now reads the volume name of my 64 gig "jukebox". The big surprise for me was that sync can play my FLAC audio files. First car stereo I've had to do that.

Is 3.0 available for my 2016 XLT? Or this a 2017/2018 thing? I didn't see it as an option on the Owner.Ford website.
