Looks like some big changes coming soon so maybe the full release will be even better.
What other big changes may be coming as part of an update release?

Update to what ?
I still have no idea what the usefulness of sync 3 actually is and i'm a techie kinda person.
For a guy who has no use for navigation, connects phone via bluetooth & just plays Flac/Lossless files through USB what could be a benefit ?

Waze has been promised for android auto by google
Sygic navigation has been promoted by ford, possible applink? Note this will be the first applink app to require being plugged in by usb unless it will be a normal AA app. AA always requires being plugged in for now.
Amazon Alexa has been promoted by ford and others.

Apple is working towards carplay over wifi, i have to assume android auto is also. We already have the wifi radio so not a stretch to think that AA will also get it too.

hoping ford makes an android auto app to control radio and climate.

I am sure there is more to be announced with the Waze availability as that is a change to the rules for Android Auto. Fingers crossed they will add apps like Torque on Android.

You know oddly enough:
Wifi can use transfer speeds of up to 250 Mbps.
Bluetooth 4.0 transfer up to 25 Mbps.

We know our trucks have a wireless NIC in them.
And obviously our phones do.

Maybe it SHOULD just be wifi. Although 25 Mbps is a pretty decent amount.

Right now AA and carplay both require plugging in, wifi is the solution apple chose to avoid needing to plug in. I imagine that it will still require bluetooth even after enabling wifi carplay.

Actually with 802.11ac, you can see connections of 1.3Gbps connections. Apple recommends a head unit has 802.11ac.

Here's a couple of slides from the following WWDC presentation on developing for CarPlay (https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2016/722/)
Bluetooth is used for the phone/head unit to pass WiFi credentials in order for the two devices to connect. which is nice, since it requires no involvement from the user.

I know the wireless chipset in the APIM supports 802.11g (2.4ghz) and 802.11a (5ghz). But I haven't checked to see if it support 802.11ac

Apline announced last week @ CES a head unit that provides wireless CarPlay, so it sounds like Apple is starting to allow this functionality.

I love this day and age where a pickup forum becomes this technical - and is all still relevant to the pickup topic.

Default Question

So I've successfully updated my '16 XLT from 1.0 to 2.2 using the download from FORD binaries site, and I noticed a new entry under the info section. SYNC Serial Number (ESN).

Is this unique to the stereo (hard coded) or is this software related? Does this mean we all have the same serial number since we are all using the same software to do the update and will this affect future auto-updates if so?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, I'm just curious.

Thx.

i got this error after a failed installation and a retry. I did a master reset, tried the re-install. Disk 1, got the error. Did not restart the truck and inserted disk 2. It installed successfully. The only problem was a missing Gracenote version number, but the Sync version showed v2.2. After some help from JM061 I was able to fix the missing serial number as well. Everything worked correctly.
