Take a look at the document I posted in post #3316 (above). The statement is in that document on the first page.

Default Ford Sync 3 Update

Hi All,

I'm not an F-150 owner but I do have an Escape and would like to share on how I installed the official release of Sync 3 v 2.2 update using a USB.

The zip file that contains the update that you downloaded from Ford is somewhat messed up on Mac OS as it is not extracting the files to it's proper location or folder.

I did everything on my end, I got a 4 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB and all of them formatted on exFAT and all of them yielded an installation failed out of space notification.

When I clearly examine the file list vs the content of the USB, it's not showing the supposed file structure of the update which is really critical, so pulled out my old windows laptop and re-dloaded and re-formatted my USB but this time only my 4 GB and when I extracted the zip file to the USB, it matches the file structure so I was confident that it will go thru. So at 12:30 am I was in my car, started and after making sure that all systems are go, I plugged in the USB and voila...software update in progress and in less than 20 minutes (i think depending on the speed of USB drive although i will not recommend using bigger drives, the installation will finish faster).

And now, i'm hunting for the USB Hub for my Ford escape.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys, so I attempted the updated on my 2016 F150 from 1.0 to the 2.2 from Fords site. Followed the directions from Ford to a T. I never got an error message or out of space message like some have said. As soon as I plugged it in, it started the message at the top saying Updating System Software...

However, after running my truck for almost 2 hours, I finally gave up and shut it off as it never updated. It never changed screens and never said it was completed just kept saying the same message. When i talked to Ford friday before I attempted this update, they said it needs to at least be a 32 gb thumb drive. Well all I had was a 128 gb (format to exfat) thumb drive and figured that should work. I talked to Ford again today and now they are saying the update could take up to 2 hours and that using the 128 gb may be too much? This has to be a joke as they completely told me different things on friday (up to 30 min to install and minimum of 32 gb thumb drive). How do they think people just have 2 hours to run their truck for an update? Clearly whoever I talked to at Ford was less knowledgeable that the others I have talked to.

Either way, I dont seem to have any issues with my sync after I shut the truck off and removed the thumb drive. I see some of you have recommended using a 4 gb thumb drive instead of Fords 32gb recommendation. What are people mostly using size wise for the thumb drive? Should I just attempt the install again even though I stopped the update before? Does it matter whether the thumb drive is a 2.0 or 3.0? Thank you in advance for your help!

I was having the same problem as you and many people on this forum. I just couldnt get the new update to install. I gave up on in and didnt even bother with it anymore. But then something funny happened just today when i was playing with the settings and noticed that i have a new android auto icon in the settings and remembered that it wasnt there before. So i went to check the sync version and there it was, a 2.2. How that happened and when i have no idea, but i somehow i have a new version and everything seems to be working just fine.

Is your truck also connected to wifi? And did you also have to stop the test while it was still saying updating system software?

May 22 2017 4863 - 2016-2017 Ford/Lincoln – SYNC 3 v2.2 – APIM Programming Installation Failed Error

A ‘Installation Failed Error Code: MEM_ERR03’ error message may occur when programing the SYNC module to v2.2. Programming tips: The USB flash drive must be 32GB formatted to exFAT. Do not remove the USB flash drive from the media hub until the final installation message is displayed (non-Nav vehicles have two installation complete messages). Perform a complete ignition cycle by turning the key off for 5 minutes (open/close driver’s door) which is critical for a successful installation. If these tips are ineffective, perform a SYNC master reset (Settings > General > Master Reset), ignition OFF for 5 minutes, ignition ON, and insert the USB drive again to complete programming. If the message is still present, no additional repairs should be attempted. Engineering is aware and is currently investigating. Monitor OASIS for future updates.

Yes i have my truck hooked up to a wifi so im thinking it might have updated itself over wifi, since the new version of SYNC it also showing on SYNCMYRIDE site.
And also i tried to update it a few times over a USB but it would take up to a 1h and 45 min before i finally gave up and unplugged the usb.

Default Install has totally broken voice commands

Do we have a fix yet for the missing voice commands/Gracenote/no CarPlay issue?
