Mine is supposed to here tomorrow. I will definitely be on the watch for this problem. I wonder if these issues are mainly from northern snow/salt states or just a manufacturing issue.

Should be warrantable under 3/36, so long as there are no other road rash or dings from something else hitting it. The dealer will need to photograph and get prior approval from Ford. Physical Vapor Deposition chrome is finicky...the prep, how they are maintained and what cleaning solutions used. Machined and clear coated wheels are equally a pain in our salty winters. I try to stick to painted.

I swapped the chrome package 18’s for base Lariat 18’s before this started on mine. Too many people had issues so I got rid of em.

Yeah, I’m not 100% fan of the 18” sport wheels (really wish I had the 20 version) - but at the same time, glad I won’t have issues with peeling.

I had the same issue on my 2010 Edge after 2 years. The service manager at my dealer said that I wasn't the first to complain about it and they replaced all 4 without any issue. That was in 2012. Fast forward to 2016. I get a recall letter from Ford stating there is an issue with the wheels on our 2015 Fusion (looked fine to me) and said go to the dealer, pick out new wheels (2 or 3 options) and dealer will notify when they are available. What the hell is it with Ford wheels? I had a 1991 F-150 with the drilled aluminum wheels and they were perfect when I sold it in 2002. I bought a 2002 F-150 with the aluminum wheels and sold that earlier this year and the wheels on that were in great condition as well.

Sounds like the old wheels were perfect until Ford decided to reinvent the wheel, literally!

It's not just Ford. I had all 4 wheels on my 2010 Tundra replaced by Toyota due to failing clearcoat. Had a similar issue on my last Accord also. My friend's wife has a Lexus RX350, and the chrome wheels look like trash (peeling etc.). I think wheels just take a terrible beating.

They are all made in China. What do you expect?

PVD wheels are "supposed" to be more durable than chrome but they are more sensitive to chemicals. Since the protection and application are similar to paint I've been putting a spraying wax as you dry on them occasionally. Figured if it's safe for the paint should be good for the wheel.

Don't tell Ford that if an issue arises.
