Default choose 5.0 over 3.5 eco/10 speed...your crazy

just picked up my 2017 STX its got the 10 speed with 3.5 ecoboost. drove my 2014 with ecoboost for 78k until I got hit by someone and totaled it out. spent 5 weeks in a 2017 lariat with 5.0 rental, I put about 2500 miles on that truck. That truck flat out annoyed me yes it was a lariat and I am an XLT guy. yes it had 8k miles on it and was just about new. but the powertrain combo I hated. you just seemed to need to use alot of pedal travel in the throttle didn't matter if its on the highway or whatever. The transmission always wanted you in high gear chugging along at 1800 rpm. at this RPM the 5.0 is probably putting out half the torque of the 3.5 ecoboost at the same RPM

till I picked up this truck I had never actually driven a 3.5 ecoboost in the new models. test drove a 2.7 but not the 3.5. all I got to say is WOW, This powertain combo is awesome. you litterly think it over hills and rises in the road. it feels like half an inch is all the travel you seem to ever need. I know people say the 5.0 is more reliable and simple. yes I get it. but you simply can't give up or ignore how much better the 3.5 and the 10 speed is over the v8. The motor never seems like its even breaking a sweat. Its seamless and awesome. I have seen plenty of reviews on these trucks online but none seem to truly capture how much better this combo is over others and even over the first gen 3.5 motor and trans.

there are others things I prefer about the previous generation truck no doubt. most noteable for me is the ride quality. to me it seems like it has the same springs as the old models even though the truck is way lighter. when you go over bumps its like there is not as much control over the suspension and you get extra movement transmitted through the frame . I may be switching to bilsteins so maybe that would help settle that out. android auto and sync 3 are so much better than the old system. that alone might be worth upgrading to a new truck.

I have a 17 Lariat 5.0 on order, the dealer couldn't understand why I didn't want the 3.5 ecoboost with the 10 speed.
I have several reasons why I made my choice, most of which won't make much sense to anyone but me.
1. My current D/D is a 5 speed manual, my weekend toys are both 6 speed manuals.
The 17 will become my daily.
2. The 17 MY comes with a 6 speed auto, the 18's get the 10 speed, who's claim to fame is skipping gears to improve gas mileage.
3. Auto start/stop.................& I don't care if you can turn it off.
4. I don't tow anything, the 3.5's extra torque isn't needed.

Doesn't have to make sense to anyone else. It's your money and your truck...as long as you're happy with it that is all that matters

Many people choose the 5.0 over the Ecoboost and many more will do so with the 2018 model having better torque/ HP and the 10 speed transmission.
Reliability is another huge selling point as all F150 forums are full of Ecoboost problems.
There are very few new reported issues with the 5.0 in comparison.

I have a 3.5 EB with over 300,000 km on it. While I have not had any real problems with it after the warranty expired, I wouldn't hesitate to order a 2018 5.0, probably with the 373's.

2015 with 6 speed here.
That's the same way I feel when I drive my 3.5 eco. It still amazes me how little of input is needed to scoot right along.
Also going up steep bridge approaches at 55 mph in high gear (6th for me) never even wanting to downshift.

Not another EB vs V8 argument, please! They are both great motors.

worm can opened...

Be happy with what you have. Stop insulting those who made a different decision than you did. Just because their (our) decision was different than your decision does not make it wrong. You are now part of the problem here.

Also, you probably should have gone with 'you're' rather than 'your' when calling us crazy. I mean, if you're going to call me names as though I am stupid for making the decision I made, I am going to point out that your grasp of the english language is lacking.

The thought process is quite simple for those who don't need the low end torque:

- Fires up EB
- Listens to exhaust
- "this would be an adorable power plant for my teenage daughter"
- Buys truck that doesn't sound like a rice cooker

Really though, the EB is a perfectly good platform. That doesn't mean it's a universally appealing platform.
