Changed Spark Plugs on 2.7 @ ~30k Miles
As some of you guys know, I've been running a Livernois tune (91 tow & 91 perf) on my 2.7 since around 10k miles. I'm just about to roll 28k and decided to change the plugs to get a baseline on how they look. Also IIRC, Livernois recommends changing the plugs at 30k.
The new plugs were all gapped to 0.028 out of the box (Motorcraft SP542) - Manual recommends 0.028 to 0.030. I had a shop install them for me.
Since the manual recommends 100k and being there's not many people with that amount of miles yet, I thought I'd share what they look like below (@28k miles). Overall I don't think they look too bad, however, I will plan to continue to change them every 30k as a pre-caution with the tune.

I'd say they look pretty good.

What are the gaps on the old plugs? Were the new plugs made in Japan like the old ones?

Thanks, I didn't think they looked too bad either. I know you don't have too many miles on yours but if you end up keeping it, are you planning on changing them @ 30k or given any thought to when?
Sorry, not sure on either. I need to purchase a gap tool and will report back on what the old ones are at as I'm curious as well. I did ask the shop to triple check the gap on the new ones and they said they were all at 0.028 out of the box and said Ford/Motorcraft has been good the last few years with gaps being consistent.
Yep, I agree. For the low cost, it's maintenance worth doing to mitigate any potential issues.

The gap on the old plugs appears quite a bit bigger than .028...

The plugs still look good. Not bad for a tune and 30K. Probably could go longer. I believe stock plugs are iridium so they last quite a while and since I'm not tuned I plan on changing them around 75K-100K. Although some plugs are rated over 100K I don't like doing that because the gap may widen out of spec or get seized. If I'm gonna take the plugs out, might as well change it. Ain't expensive.

based on what and with what measurement reference point. I bet they are still under the 0.030 that is the top of the variance spec. Unless they were out of spec at the factory.
Driving a number of GM's cured me of this worry. ON a ford - I'm not so sure but that's more to do with how deep in the hole they are.
my GTO and G8 both LS variant engines ran to 100K miles tuned but stock internals without issue one and without loss of power. plugs came out well and mostly clean. I went back with platinums though instead of iridiums for the dollars. and because I was taking them out at or near 150K. G8 has 152K on the clock now - and I'm getting ready for new plugs - because of new cam. (both tuned but no molested due to how they were raced)
To that end - why does livernois recommend changes at 30K on the ecoboost mill with a tune. Unless you've turned up the boost, significantly I wouldn't think that was necessary and more so if you did turn up the boost that much I would suspect you'd run a colder plug range.
