A chance to remember and say thanks

To all who have served and died protecting these United States over the last two and half centuries.
I was thinking back to when I was a boy my dad, who served during Korea, would take us with him on Memorial Day ceremonies. The American Legion would have a bus for all the vets and kids tagging along and tour cemeteries in the area where they would do a color guard. It was pretty impressive and at times emotional watching my dad and the other vets in their American Legion uniforms march up to the flag stand, present arms and give a Three Volley Salute. We kids would run out and collect the brass after.
It was a big deal for us because we could get our fill of birch beer and Coke before and during the bus ride then lots of hot dogs and potato chips after.
I just can't help but think something has been lost or forgotten along the way.

No doubt about that.

Thanks to all that served and were lost.

This weekend isn't the time for politics - regardless of your personal beliefs. Stow that crap until Tuesday and enjoy the time with your family, brought to you courtesy of more than a million soldiers who gave everything so you could freely do so.

Remember, memorial day honors those who died in service. We love our veterans, too, but their day of honor is separate. The confusion between the two days is a little frustrating. Let's let those who died in service get their day all to themselves, please.

I can not agree with you more. I am a huge supporter of this. I was trying to remember those friends I lost.

Thanks to all that have served, today tomorrow and yesterday!

There are three days of service:

Armed Forces day (those currently in uniform)
Veterans day (those that wore the uniform)
Memorial day (Those that never took off their uniform)

I'd say that none have been forgotten. Every year the crowds get larger at all the places services are held here. Tons of scout troops show up to help. The non-military cemeteries aren't as busy as family and friends pass on or become too old to go, but the military cemeteries and memorials are packed on Memorial day.

Attendance at local parades here in SE WI seem to be getting larger each year. I'm think it's probably because we still have service men and women fighting overseas.
