catch can 3.5 eco boost

Do it
Having the same truck ( 15 3.5TT ) you should invest in one. Yes they are way overpriced. Yes they do there advertised job. If you want that engine running tip top shape, it needs it. Will it run without it after 120k miles, yes but it will be a dirty soab inside.

It's actually widely known that excessive oil vapor/contamination effectively lowers the octane rating of the fuel within the cylinder. That is why oil composition has such a large impact in the control of detonation on EcoBoost engines, and similarly designed GTDI applications. Now, a controlled, minute amount of vapor can actually aid in engine protection, but the reality is that very few people maintain their vehicle with top level oil, an proper frequency to prevent accumulation of oil in the intake tract. Because of this, a catch can is a worthy investment, but only if it's well designed enough to limit the amount of oil vapor rather than completely remove it. Take a look at many performance vehicles like the Camaro 1LE, Mustang GT350, and others that are being outfitted with oil/air separators right from the factory. If there was 0 benefit, then you wouldn't see OEM's invest money into their development and implementation.

Lord here we go again. Your Truck will be fine not having a "catch can" as are all of ours. But anyone on here that tells you you would be better off without one is an idiot. Will it catch oil/water before it goes back through the combustion cycle....yes. It simply isn't a terrible thing nor do I believe it throws off your air/fuel ratio enough to be trouble. It's like changing your oil every 5 months instead of every 6. I run one on my boosted Mustang but not on my Truck. Some applications need it more than others. If it will give you peace of mind absolutely get one but no it is not a mandatory item.

No problem, happy to help out! We run catch cans on all sorts of different platforms here in the shop and I can definitely agree they all collect some oil vapor. The direct injection and DI turbocharged engines seem to really benefit from them. A lot of people report back after a while to tell us how surprised they were to see a significant amount of oil vapor that the catch cans had picked up when they go to check or empty them for the first time. Searching EcoBoost videos on Youtube I run across quite a few videos of people showing off the catch can's contents they've drained into a clear bottle.

Seriously? It's pretty simply actually...catch cans catch oil/water before it goes back into the combustion cycle. Is it needed...not so much...does it help...uhm...yeah. I don't recall proper mixture for air/fuel/water/oil...maybe you can enlighten us.
