Can I add the keypad to a '17 STX?
 

I've had my '17 STX for a few weeks now and I'm trying to dress it up a little. I want to swap out the textured black B-pillar covers with gloss black but was wondering if it is possible to add the keypad while I'm at it. The truck came with a code in the glove box. Is it pre-wired and ready for the keypad?

What exactly do people do with the keypad? I had one on an '87 Taurus and the only reason I liked it was for PT (in the army) I could lock my keys in the car and not have to carry them. I could punch in a code and unlock the doors and I could do something else to lock it. Is that all it does still? I don't see why these things are even on these trucks with all the keyless entry and stuff. I must be missing something.

That's basically the reason I would want it. I'd like to be able to just throw my keys in the console while I'm playing softball or whatever and not have to worry about carrying them along.

Plus I want to replace the textured matte plastic with gloss black to dress it up some so I figured now would be the time to figure out if it's possible to add the keypad.

You obviously have never locked your keys in your truck.




Plus, some of us frequent places that require you to surrender your vehicle keys upon entering their compound. With the door keypad, you can leave your keys secured in your truck.

I know a few who used the stick on but put it in their gas cap area so no one knew it was there. Also remember the stick on one you cannot change the batteries.

Is that really attitude? Dang. My experience with keyless entry is that you can NOT lock keys in the car because you can't lock the doors if the keys are detected inside. No way to do it, no how. So now I'm learning, I guess, that Ford will indeed let me push the button on the door handle and lock the doors even if the key is inside. I'll have to look out for that.

And if you have to surrender your keys to someone, you can't really do that if they are locked in the truck, and whomever is coming to "confiscate" your keys is going make you open the truck to get the keys.

So, on the one hand, we have a serious flaw I wasn't aware of (being able to lock keys in the car with keyless entry) and a breakdown in logic (can't surrender keys if they are in the truck.

I don't use emoticons very often, but I guess one must be fitting here.

Trust me, you do NOT want to "upgrade" to the glossy pillars. They scratch unbelievably easily and end up looking worse than your matte ones. In fact if you already had the keypad I'd gladly trade you pillars.

If you really want them glossy consider a gloss vinyl wrap. Will be a lot more durable than the finish on the OEM plastic.
