Cam Phaser Failure Inevitable?
I had mine replaced under warranty at 36k. I'm now at just shy of 100k and not under warranty. No rattles but thinking if it started I might not care enough to part with the @3500 to make it quiet again.
Mine have rattled since I bought it with 32k on it. I had an honest mechanic point out that it's just a noise and not going to cause any issues.
125K now and no issues.

If it comes back, I wont do a damn thing about it.
After a week the truck was complete and upon picking it up I noticed the following for the parts used 🥴
HL3Z 6256 CD: SPROCKET - CAMSHAFT
ML3Z 6C525 A: CAM
So 50% updated…? I can’t believe the HL3Z parts are still lurking around. I’ll see how it turns out.
Performed TSB 23-2143a
Separate thought, the ESP has saved me a ton of money, so the gamble there paid off.
My 2018 had the phasers replaced around 61k miles, right before I bought it. They used the updated part so hopefully I never have to do them…
The failure mode is a locking pin that hold the phasers in the home position until the engine generates enough oil pressure to actively control the phasers. The locking pin hole wears out so it can’t hold the pin in place. So when you start up, the phasers are empty of oil and rattle around until oil pressure builds. As long as it’s not dumping metal into the oil it’s probably not going to cause further damage or any issues while running.

2018 - 3.5 EB. Had the phasers switched out 5 years ago when it became obviously apparent that the originals were faulty even though the ones I had were still fine. No problems at 85K with the upgraded ones.
