Default Cam Phaser Failure Inevitable?

Hello,
I have a 2018 XLT with the 3.5 Ecoboost and approximately 50,000 miles. I purchased this truck used from the original owner who seemed to have taken exceptionally good care of the truck. After reading about the cam phaser issues, i am curious, how often is this problem affecting our trucks (failure rate?). In some forums/threads, it appears that this is affecting everyone’s rigs? Is it a given that this will happen not if, but when? Are there any folks with higher mileage rigs and still on the original cam phasers and without issue? I do really enjoy this truck and have no current issues, but as i am out of warranty, my mind wonders if I should think about trading it in for something else (especially if the large repair bill for new cam phasers is inevitable?).

Truly appreciate the time, everyone.

I'm on mt 2nd 2019 F150 with the 3.5 ECO. Both experienced the issue. First truck at about 75K, Second truck at 70K. Traded the first one in and spent $3600 fixing the second one.

Default On this forum, yes.

The age old, no one visits here that isn't having issues with their pickup. Percentages hard to come by. Manufacturers don't publish how many failures they have. With that in mind, I made it to 64,000 miles before the start up rattle began on my 2017 F150, 3.5 turbo. Oil changed by dealer every 3000 miles. Going in Monday for cam phaser replacement. Pickup running fine after the start up. Rattle is not every startup. Mostly when parked awhile. But I purchased extended warranty and may as well use it. Hopefully the new version of phaser lasts longer and this is the last repair I have to do.

I’ve never had an issue, I did have the re-call/ re-program performed a while back. Now I do only have 44,000 miles on mine but it’s always been quiet as a mouse! It has had an auto-stop eliminator since it was new and has had an oil change between 3500 and 4000 miles with Castrol Edge 5W-30. Call me crazy but it gets driven like a truck and hauls and tows and the back seat is a dog house most of the time! It only drives 8 miles each way to work and sits in a UPS parking lot all day, and if there’s no horse trailer on it it sits in a garage all night!( I call it spoiled!)

Default No noise at 61,500

2018 XLT I purchased 2/1/2020 with ~34,000 miles. No cam phaser failure yet at 61,500. Had recall done where the PCM gets flashed. We’ll see how long it goes (especially since I jinxed myself with this reply).

I had the PCM reflash around 55k. Completely ruined the driving experience. Bad shifts. Sluggish power. Shudder.

that said, that was the first flash to fix the phaser issue and it was a faulty flash. They since have updated it from what I understand.

I too had the PCM reflash done on my current truck at 24K miles. Didn't stop the phasers from being a problem for me.

Completely agree with Stil on the driving experience too. I didn't realize it at the time, but when I had the phasers replaced, and part of that was replacing that original flash with a new one, my truck felt alive again.

Define failure.... Mine has 130k on it and other than a rattle , no issues.
