The damper should pop down into that hole, then you can push the end of the damper through that hole to unlatch it. Don't use too much force or you can pull the hole damper assembly apart.

You need a trim tool to pry the trim piece out from above the glovebox. You can use a screwdriver, but that will most likely mar the trim piece.

If you think your year of truck is different, if you told us the model year and trim level it would help.
Thank you so much 52merc. mine is 2018 XLT. I did it now. I didn't do anything on damper, just squeeze the hole behind damper out of position. And I have to pull really hard with both top and bottom of plastic piece to get it out. Thanks. I finishing the replacement now. I appreciate your help.

It helps if you lift the glove box just a little. I had to do that yesterday to finish running a power cord from the windshield area down to the fuse panel.

Yeah, I had no problem replacing my cabin air filter. It was much easier than my wife's previous 2017 Explorer, which I ended up breaking a piece to get it done. The F150 is probably the easiest I've ever done.

I have a 2014 Explorer too. Pain in the butt.

I have the trim tools and I still can’t get that wood grain piece off. Already made a small crack in it. There must be some magic to getting it off, because we have pried on it to the point of seemingly nearly breaking the piece and it doesn’t budge. Looks like it’s gonna be $100 and let the Ford dealer mess with it. Has anyone priced this trim piece out? Wondering what it would cost to go ahead and break it vs taking the truck in to the shop.

It is not easy to remove. You have to get the tool completely under the trim piece before you do any prying and DON'T TWIST IT! Thats how I broke mine. You need two tool, there is the pry bar and another one that looks like a square tongue depressor. You need to work the pry under using the tongue depressor in a sort of rocking motion. lift, wiggle, reposition, lift wiggle, under it gets all the way in, then pry and it will pop out.

I had the same issue and actually chipped off some small pieces of the wood trim. Luckily though, when i put the black rubber mat back on, it completely covered it up. The first change i purchased the filter off amazon and the dealer charged me $30 to install it. I will be doing that for the next time it needs ot be changed and consider it a "convenience" charge.

Thanks! I finally got it by ordering a different trim tool off Amazon that was made of harder plastic and flexed less. That last piece, black cover hiding the filter door was a tough one. But having done it once now, it will be much easier next time .

I had the same experience. You think you're going to break the wood piece, but you won't. Work your way across and pop out one section at a time. Just don't twist the pry tool because that will bend the plastic backing and crack the wood venier. Once you've done it once it's not hard, and the pieces come out easier the second time.

So, my 2017 Lariat has a switch at the upper left corner of the glovebox, but I don’t see where there could be a light. What am I missing? I just figured out how to repair tha damper before I went on this site, but I realized I wasn’t seeing the light in the glovebox.
