Yep a nylon or plastic pry tool set is worth investing in for sure. They are cheap anyways and make the job much easier.

K&N now has a reusable filter. Amazon for around $70 including a replenishing kit. No oil to worry about. Put one in on the weekend - only hitch, no directions for which way up, but does not seem to matter. Well made and looks durable.

I want the better filtering of the OEM paper filter media.

There have been several independent air filter tests, and the OEM paper filter media always filters better than K&N's gauze filter media.

Several years ago, I did my own tests on OEM paper filter vs K&N gauze filter. I did a smoke test on both filters, and the smoke passed through the K&N, but was blocked by the OEM paper filter. I also took magnified photos of the paper filter media, and K&N gauze filer media, and you can see why the K&N doesn't filter as well:
