Should be a pretty easy job for the dealer. Just take a look at all the surface rust on the differentials of new trucks. It's a nice patina that adds character

Interesting, mine had the same mark as well on my 2016. I didn't notice it until after I had my coilovers installed so had assumed the mechanic did it.

I did what others suggested and sanded it down a bit and hit it with Rustoleum. No issues over the winter so far. Good to go.

I'm so unconcerned with it that I'm not even going to check mine.

Calm down because it`s not a big deal.

It`s called surface rust.

When I read a posting like this, I often wonder what decade some of these people grew up in because it`s obvious they`ve never been under a car, changed their own oil, or even changed a tire.

You drove 45 minutes....for that?
Shoot it with some Rustoleum and forget about it like an adult.
I've seen some useless threads started here but this one is one of the worst.
Oh and guess what....your rear end is rusty too...just like everyone else's.

Even joined a forum and created a thread over it. I have a feeling he will be one of the guys that create a thread like this then never return. Demand a replacement O.P!!!

Man really feeling the love over here guys. I have been under plenty of vehicles and done plenty of my own work under them. I understand surface rust on a vehicle especially one with a little age on it. This is my first F-150 I've ever purchased, just came out of a lease on a 2014 Fx2. I've lurked here for awhile and yes I just got a little freaked because I like to take good care of my vehicles and the fact that it looked like something had scraped it and left such a distinct marking made me fear it could be worse than your average surface rust. Most of you have talked me off the ledge very nicely and I will definitely sand and rustoleum that bad boy asap if the stealership doesn't' offer anything free of charge. Love this truck to death and I can't wait to throw on the level, wheels, n tires.

Nice. Stay and hangout man, it's a good place. To their (our?) defense, I must say that I've noticed an increase in these type of threads lately. Some are just absolutely ridiculous (and some are absolutely valid) - and I honestly try to refrain from commenting on them. Some threads are a lot more valid than others. Here's a list just off the top of my head in the last few days (in no particular order)...

Rust on frame thread.
Rust on differential thread.
Oil change guy left oil cap off.
Oil change guy stepped on step bar, but between the plastic parts.
Transmission magically came out of park thread.

I'm not dismissing anyone's opinion on their 'incident' - because obviously they're going to *initially* feel a certain way.

Anyway, I just mention those quickly (from the past few days, solely from memory alone - might not be fully inclusive or accurate) because it's probably pretty easy for the community to see a thread, hop in, act dismissive, and rub someone the wrong way.

So yeah - I get how you feel OP. You took the thread pretty well.

PS - I think Trotter solved it - it looks like it could be from the chain that is used to secure your truck to the car hauler that brought it to the dealership.

That's where they insert the hook to chain it down on the trucks, probably chain rubbing for miles in it just hit with some paint
