As someone who also carries around a lot of water (2 32oz Nalgenes), I am extremely disappointed in my 15's cupholders. My 04 FX4 had inserts that could be removed to hold Nalgene bottles but when left in, they could hold normal coffee mugs and cups.
Right now I'm forced to either hold the bottles in my lap or toss them into the passenger footwell. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.
For the record my wife has a .75L Camelbak Eddie - http://goo.gl/atsnJh
and it "fits" but not really. You have to JAM it into the cupholder and completely deform the three rubber "fingers".
My Contigo Autoseal - http://goo.gl/wbTpge fits perfectly.
I ordered and tried this - http://goo.gl/0FRSf3 but it doesn't sit into the cupholder enough because of the square trim around both of the cupholders. It's also not deep enough for large bottles. With my Nalgene bottle full it would tip over and fall out during hard acceleration and braking. I contacted the seller and tried to return it. He was very nice and gave me a full refund and refused to take it back. He was just happy for the feeback about his product.
With the abundance of water bottles out there right now that are far below the $40 price of the Yeti tumblers, I'm extremely surprised at how bad the cupholders are in this truck. They are extremely good at holding the standard convenience store cup of coffee or fast food cup of soda (of which I don't use either) but extremely BAD at holding anything else!
This is one of those items that when it works for you in your truck you don't even think about it. But when it doesn't work for you, IT'S all you can think about. I have water with me driving to and from work every day and every night to and from the gym. And right now I don't have a way to store anything I own in a cupholder in my truck. Despite having 4 in the center consoles and 4 in the doors.
I think I'm going to try either the Kleen Kanteen - http://goo.gl/ximgIc or the HydroFlask - http://goo.gl/7DgZdy and see if either of those work.

I miss my 2004 Lariat. I now have the 2015 XLT. A Foster's oil can fit in the 2004 cup holder like a charm...now I have to hold it between my legs because the '15 cup holders are puny as hell!

I'm right there with you. My Ram had the swing down cup holder off of the dash that was adjustable. I could fit any size drink in them. Since the Ford, I have not been able to fit any of my water bottles or cups in it. I'll have to go shopping for smaller versions soon.

I don't know about the later models but my 2019 has four spring loaded "holders" in each cup holders that grip whatever size bottle or cup you put in there. I have had no problems holding anything from small 16oz water bottles to Big Gulp sized coffee mugs.

I just changed from a 2017 Superduty to a 2016 F150 with bucket seats, and the cupholders are driving me crazy. I searched this hoping to find someone who had retrofitted the 2017+ SD or the 2019 F150 cupholders into their 15-18 F-150. Has anyone found a way to swap these, hopefully with the larger, newer model ones with the 3-4 spring loaded tabs?
