Best truck of the year.

Yeah, it's too bad the rest of us "real world" customers couldn't get close to the truck. I was at the show and they were locked up and up on a turntable.

I can understand why, but it's rather annoying that Ford pretends the public has full access to these pre-production trucks at auto-shows when they actually have none at all. And I'm sure that's the way it will stay for all of the auto shows this year.

I found it a bit strange that Ford did not make the cut in Truck Trend's / Motor Trend's truck of the year contenders. GM had four trucks, Dodge had three and Toyota had the Tundra. I guess Ford had no major changes for 2014 so they were not considered. For these publications to say that the Dodge, excuse me, Ram 1500 is the new truck of the year is based upon incomplete testing procedures as far as I am concerned. If they did include Ford with the EcoBoost, it would outperform the Ram in nearly every category. Towing would be a major consideration for most truck owners and the Ram even with the new 3.0 diesel does not haul the load that the gas 3.5 Ecoboost does. It is also strange that each truck was judged on towing based upon various trailer weights. How does this work for making acceleration comparisons? Very strange. I can understand that the Ram 1500 is the first recent 1/2 ton PU to get a diesel engine and the 8-speed trans is also new. But for overall performance, this $57K truck would not be my choice when diesel fuel is about 50 cents per gallon more than regular gas. The 32 gallon tank will cost you $125 to fill and will get you 800 miles down the road. The Ford 36 gallon tank will cost you about the same to fill and get you 800 miles down the road. The difference is that the Ford will out haul the Ram, the Ford is much cheaper to maintain, the Ford will start in sub-zero conditions easily and the overall cost of a comparably equipped truck is much less in a Ford version. I had a F-250 diesel and went back to a gas truck due to reliability issues. I had two Tundras and switched to Ford due to reliability issues. GM's are OK but Dodge never really felt like a quality vehicle to me. This new "Truck of the Year" could not even haul my loaded snowmobile trailer legally. WTF?

IMO, the title 'TRUCK OF THE YEAR' has become somewhat of a rotational annual accolade based on refreshes during the quiet years and awards to the manufacturers of the periodic all-new models every 3-5 years. Thus, next year it will be Ford's turn again. The back-to-back wins by Ram were an anomaly due to the diesel engine intro. I'm not knocking any manufacturer's product, just recognizing the rotation of awards. But, over the long haul, say several decades, I favor Ford as my TRUCK OF A LIFETIME.

I'm frankly surprised that Motor Trend had the guts not to give Truck of the Year to Chevy. It IS a big turd. Chevy is going to have to follow with a small diesel soon to compete with the Dodge 3.0 diesel and the Ecoboost. As it is, there engine lineup is very short on torque in a usable rpm range. What will be even more interesting will be to see whether Ford figures they need to have a small diesel. I honestly don't see the need for one given the Ecoboost's torque curve. But, there are people out there who just have to have their diesel.

motor trend isn't what it used to be now that there are many sites like TTAC that are producing honest results, and are getting members involved in articles. MT should be doing truck of the year, a year after the release if they want some credibility. then you would know after one year of everything you can do with it how it held up, what was the yearly average fuel economy, how many trips needed to be taken to the dealer for warranty work and faulty parts, etc. the ram is a hot mess of cheap electronics, and faulty switches. not to mention the orange peel in the paint. yeah the 8 speed and the engines are good but the truck is incomplete in my eyes. I was going to buy one and decided id be stupid to do it!
the Silverado is having a lot of issues right out of the gate. more to do with faulty steering and suspension parts with no grease ever put in them; they are sealed. dashes cracking and warping from cold weather, bad tires from factory, also one recall for trucks bursting into flames lol.
ford has a reliable truck that I am willing to plop down my cash on. BTW it looks better too!
