Not true - There are 4 batteries released. Non-SS XL and XLT are released with a H6 SLI, SS with H6 AGM.

Lariat and higher trims with non-SS H7 SLI,; SS with H7 AGM.

Battery size is determined primarily by feature content. Battery type is primarily determined based on powertrain: gas vs. Hybrid and Stop/Start vehicles.

AGM's do not have larger capacity, but they are able to hold voltage to a lower state of charge and able to be re-charged more times compared to a standard wet cell. Battery capacity is determined by group size - basically amount of lead and acid available. Special batteries that use premium components or use more thinner plates with appropriate support can tweak out more capacity. But for general run of the mil batteries, they are all about the same for given size.

According to the 2016 user manual the 2.7 with SS received the largest batteries offered and were also the only ones that came with an AGM battery.

stormsearch, I am happy to see someone seemingly so knowledgeable as yourself posting such interesting and useful battery information. Thank you for being here! funnyman, thanks too for posting your EnerSys experience. They are a world class battery manufacturer. You two will hash it out, I'm sure. Meanwhile, I remain fascinated.

Would any charge algorithm be different depending on which battery type (AGM vs. standard) Ford installs? In other words, would switching to an AGM in a non-AGM-fitted truck be a fruitless endeavor if it weren't optimally charged?

Also, I am thinking of perhaps a larger group size battery only for it's increased storage capacity (amp hour rating) but not necessarily an AGM for under the hood of my minimally-optioned XLT.

I think a group 65 will fit. However the battery terminals would be on the left side of the vent caps instead of the factory right hand side. If you are looking at the battery while it's installed in the truck. I think there is enough battery cable play to make it work.

There might be some adjustments needed in forscan to let the ecu know about the change in battery type and size. I know on the 2.7 the system monitors power usage and levels to determine if it can use SS but am unsure if that is also on other motors and what battery parameters it uses. It's probably worth taking a look at the forscan thread for evidence of changes to battery type or size.

While preparation is great, I wonder if lugging an entire battery is really the best solution. As far as the accessories, I'd consider either not using the truck and powering a stereo/etc. off another source, or at least add a good sized solar charger to keep the batteries up.

That clearly shows two batteries are released for 2.7L, H6 and H7 based on TRIM series. Other 2016 engines received the same size batteries H6 and H7 based on TRIM series. It is the battery type of AGM specified only for 2016 2.7L.

I should give you guys a heads up, one of my responsibilities here at Ford sitting in Dearborn, is D&R for batteries. My lunchtime is up and can answer other questions if possible later on. I'm only here since I'm a F150 enthusiast.

Ah cool, question on Battery for a 16 2.7 - My start stop stopped working a couple weeks ago - always says "vehicle charging " on the display - any input if this means the battery is going bad?? trucks 1.5 yrs old and never had this before, thanks

I like this idea.....beats hauling around block ice.

While I cannot comment on the reserve rating of either batteries, the AGM specified for the 2.7 and later SS models clearly has a higher CCA rating than the non-AGM used in all of the other models. Yes the battery used is dependent on the TRIM level, but even after that, the AGM battery supplied, has the ability to provide more CCA. So... the largest battery offered in the 2016 F150 is the BAGM-94RH7-800. This difference could just be the difference between who is manufacturing the battery and how they rate them, but the CCA rating is the only number they give us outside of group size.

It looks like for 2018 model year there is a new battery that might fit depending on how they layout the engine bay. (BAGM-49H8-850 - 3.0L Diesel)
