I've run into this several times unloading stuff at our local recycle yard.

I agree it would be useful if they had an additional option under auto lock to exclude the tailgate. Or to auto unlock when in park.

One of these days I'll remember to hit it walking out - until then the extra exercise won't hurt me

No. There is no way to enable auto unlock when you shift into Park.

If you have the actual handle on the tailgate, you could disconnect the locking wire as mentioned above. If you just have the button like higher end trims, I don't believe the tailgate actually locks but instead just cuts power to the switch (so the tailgate doesn't open when pressed) so I would be careful cutting power to that.

I've seen that mentioned a few times. It's not correct. My lariat (has the button), makes an audible lock sound when the doors lock.

Default 2018 F-150 Disable Tailgate Remote

An double click on the intelligent remote tailgate button will lower your tailgate. Like an accidental butt dial on our cell phones, you can have accidental double clicks on the remote that will open your tailgate when you do not want It to open. It happened to me when my truck was in the garage. Can you imagine what happened to my tailgate when it was accidently open and leaning up against the electric garage door ... my wife went to get her car out of the garage and opened the roller type garage door?
After crying, my mind went to work on how to fix the problem and never have this happen again. Let me discribe my fix.
The wiring harness on the 2018 F-150 controls the backup camera and the actuator for the tailgate. The simple fix is to wire a norally open momentary switch inline on the green-white wire. I unplugged the wire harness coming from the tailgate. When that is unugged pull it though a small ipening where it is easy to open up the tape and cut back about 3 inches of the wiring cover. Cut the green/white about 4 Inches back. This wire is in one of the corners of the plug. Get yourself about 5 feet of similar wire and solder 2.5 ft to both ends for extension. Notice when this wire is cut your tailgate can not be opened with the remote. I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the bottom plastic bumper to mount my switch. When I push the button the remote works otherwise the normally open momentary switch protects you from accidentally double clicking the tailgate button in your pictect or a ladies purse and opening the tailgate by accident. It works great for me. Email me if you have a question. Dgriley570@gmail.com.
