Default Anyone want to talk me out of pulling the trigger on a 2.7L?

I don’t need the 3.5L for towing. I only usually haul light loads and the occasional 5,500# boat over mostly flat land.

Looking at 2016-2017 2.7L or 5.0’s.

Right now, I’m heavily leaning towards the 2.7L.

5500lb boat.....I'd go with the 5.0.

2.7 will get you better mpg's than the 5.0 in day to day driving and will be totally fine with a boat that size on flat ground. Fuelly shows the 2.7 as getting 2 mpg better than the 5.0(and the 3.5 EB and every other V8) on average.

So no, I dont want to talk you out of it. I vote 2.7.

My sister had a 2017 2.7L, and it was a torquey little engine that could definitely put you in the seat. I wouldn't doubt it could pull 5000lbs without an issue...probably a lot more if they wanted it to. Out of all the stock F150's I've driven, I felt the 2.7L was the fastest from 0 to 45mph or so. After having driven it I never felt like anyone would miss anything by choosing that engine for a light duty F150 daily driver, and I don't doubt for a second it could tow 5000lbs with ease.

That said I'm partial to the V8 for various reasons, most of which are psychological. Many have reported better then expected fuel economy with the V8, but lower then expected fuel economy with the ecoboosts.

If you are not swayed emotionally about owning the V8, then I'd get whatever truck is the better deal with the options that more closely match your needs.

Nothing against the 5.0 and now that all the new F150's have start stop and Direct and multi port fuel injection. they are on a more even stand.

But I have a 2.7 and in your situation I would again get the 2.7. right now I see 20.5-21.8 mpg hand calculated on my normal weeks. and yes temp varies that becuase summer heat makes the start stop stay in the running condition more often.

It's been great so far and I would absolutely buy another. it can tow that amount with ease or so I'm told. I have nothing to tow but a utility trailer for wood and only used it twice with this truck.

If you can meet your payload needs, and occassional towing only, I'd go with the 2.7 and sleep easy.

That's what I did anyways - I tow 4 times a year around 4000 lbs - about 1000 miles total. My 2.7 does that with ease and makes my old 04 F150 with the 5.4 seem like a true snail while doing it.

2.7
i pull a jeep once and a while. You don’t even know its behind you. 30k on mine and oil pan leaks, but otherwise solid. 6 sp on mine and can always get 24 mpg. Gas is cheap right now.. but i could see where we go back to $3.50 plus over a weekend.. that is the reason to not get a V8. In the long run taxes will push gas to three bucks easy...

Fuelly.com pretty much shows that the 2.7 is far more efficient than any other premium 1/2 ton engine on MPG's and even matches the base V6's. Sure the 5.0 and 3.5 are close and could go either way, but I dont really think there is a debate that the 2.7 is the MPG king.

Test drive a 2.7.
Make sure you engage Sport mode.
Buckle up and hold on.
Should make the decision easier.
2.7 all the way
