Basically when you edit your license plate, the software just places a layer over the image. Some software allows you to remove that layer exposing the original image.
A full proof method is to cover the license plate prior to taking the pic.

As an owner of an advertising agency with 4 graphic designers who know Photoshop inside and out, I'm sorry to tell you, but you're wrong. When they are working with the photo inside Photoshop, you're correct in that they use layers and other techniques to alter the image. But when you export as a JPG or PNG (the most common image formats used on the web) the image is flattened and the layers no longer exist.
We have clients frequently ask us to edit JPG images where they assume you can remove the layer reveiling the text underneath and we have to tell them that we can't do it because they are giving us a JPG and not the original Photoshop file (PSD).
Now, can we please get back to talking about speakers.....please?

I'm not really sure the methods they use or the software. I've never cared enough to find out. I have however reverse engineered com objects when most people didn't realize it was possible.
Photoshop has become a generic term for any photo editing. I always preferred Fireworks FWIW.
Whatever you do, don't send a naughty photo and think you're safe.

Exactly. It doesn't take much effort to find a way to f**k with someone from a small piece or pieces of information, and there are too many butthurt snowflakes out there that will do it because the internet affords them the anonymity and distance to keep themselves isolated from any fallout.
