I drove around for several days with the shutters unplugged and never got a CEL.

They don't throw a CEL on the dash. Only an internal CEL. You can unplug them if you don't want them for whatever reason, if you are tuned or anything have your tuner default them to stuck open. I defaulted my intercooler ones to stay open, but my radiator ones are in default behavior.

Shutters were an option on Fords all the way back to the 1920s since the Model T. Called a "Winterfront" Helped the engine heat up faster, gas vaporization happens much easier, you get more horsepower and not as sluggish performance.

Drive a 1930 Ford around in the cold. You will notice how terrible it runs for the first 20 minutes. Heating up that engine faster is doing something other than annoying the driver or saving gas milage.

I would never mod it to stay open unless it was temporary because of malfunction. I imagine they help some with aerodynamics, but what I really like is how quickly the engine warms up so I can get some heat even in -35* weather.

It was 17 degrees this morning. I auto started my 2012 Cadillac SRX and 2016 F150 at the same time this morning and let them both warm up for 5 minutes. I had to move one car to get the other out of the drive.

The cadillac (no shutters) was still freezing inside, with a slight hint of a seat warmer on. The F150 was so toasty and comfortable when I got in it, it was great. HUGE difference in warm up time.
