87 Ethanol Free or 93 Premium 10% Ethanol
 

Curious what would be better for the truck. I have a 19 F150 3.5L Ecoboost.

I have read the countless threads before out 87 is fine, manual says 91 recommended. Some threads on Ethanol vs non ethanol.

I can get 87 Ethanol Free for $2.629
I can get 93 Premium with up to 10% ethanol for $2.59

What would yall do and why?

The higher octane lets your ECU run more timing, making better power. The ethanol free gas should get better economy, although 87 octane vs 93, I'm not sure there would be a difference because of that. 87 vs 87 you would definitely see a economy difference.

Due to power differences economy would be interesting to test. I get significantly better mpg running 93 vs 87 when towing, but both are E10. Performance wise and best for you truck wise it's a no brainer to go with the 93.

In my area " rural northern IL" the only ethanol free gas available is 91 octane. I noticed an increase of almost 3mpg switching from 87-89 octane e-10 to 91 octane e-free. Truck also runs much better on higher octane gas. Its a 18 5.0

93 octane for sure. If it was going into a boat or small engine I'd go ethanol free.

For that price definitely go with 93.

The ethanol free should net you a bit better MPG but the 93 will net you a bit more power. How are they in relation in price to normal ole 87? I have a feeling it's prob 30 or more cents cheaper in which case I'd just stick to that unless a particular tank is going to involve mostly heavy towing, in which case I'd put 91 or 93 in. No need for anything more unless you are racing the truck or something.

Octane...not beating that horse. Ethanol...ALL cars from the last couple decades are made with 10-15% ethanol in mind, so no worry about wear or corrosive properties. It's not like when the addition of ethanol first got wide spread when most cars on the road were not explicitly designed to have a percentage of ethanol running through em, where you COULD potentially have some effects in the long term even though the percentage/dilution is low enough where it's not supposed to be an issue.

switched from 87 to 93 10% and gained 2 MPG. When I ran 91 E free, it was about the same, but no ethanol in it was perfect for my small RC engines, and they run much better on it than on 93 with 10%. As with anything YMMV. Sure wish I could get 93 for $2.59

2 MPG is not worth paying for premium fuel unless there’s another benefit. Using current Sam’s Club prices which are closer than other stations:
87 octane $2.24/gal divided by 20 mpg = 11.2 cents per mile
93 octane $2.69/gal divided by 22 mpg = 12.2 cents per mile

The increased mileage costs more so financially it doesn’t make sense from that perspective. However, a smoother running engine and more power only costs 1 cent per mile more.

I use 87 in my 2.7 and it runs fine. I was getting 22 mpg before I bought new wheels and tires. Now I get 18.
