Is 6 quarts of oil too much?
For an oil change with the filter, the manual calls for 6 quarts of oil. I’ve done 5 oil changes now and each time I put in between 5.6 to 5.8 quarts of oil, which has always put me over the top (maximum) mark on the dip stick. I’m thorough about letting it drain fully -giving it 10 minutes or more.
6 quarts would be significantly overfilled and I’m trying to understand why it’s recommended.
Does anyone else get similar results?

I'm on my 3rd 3.5 Ecoboost and on each of them 6 quarts has always put them right to the full line. I put the truck on my lift and after I remove the drain plug and filter I let it drain for 10-15 minutes. I don't rush the drain process and I always pour some oil into the filter before installing it.

You should let it drain for 20 minutes minimum.

I am really OCD about stuff like tire pressure and oil level.
When I change my oil after a good long drain period I will add 1 less quart than what it calls for at first then start the engine. Then over the next hour or so while tinkering with other stuff I will start adding oil a little at a time - maybe 3 oz. Add 3oz - wait 15-20 minutes - check the dipstick. Will keep doing this until I have it right where I want it in my dipstick which is just about to the top of the hash marks.
Yeah - too much time in my hands but I can’t stand it if it isn’t just so.

On my 2017 3.5 EB, I have only drained the factory fill once, and have taken it to the dealer for the subsequent changes, but I only let it drain for about 5 minutes, and I put in a full 6 qts. It showed right at full.

When I used to change my own oil, I noticed that the hotter the engine, the quicker the draining.
I finally settled on wearing a heavy rubber glove when pulling the hot plug, and it would stop dripping after 10 minutes or so. 200° oil drains fast.
And for those with a Fumoto drain valve, try draining your oil till it stops, and then remove the valve to see how much oil is staying behind.
