Having owned a 2015 Ecoboost that I traded for my 2017 5.0, I can comment on both. First off, there was nothing at all wrong with my Ecoboost, just missed the V8 exhaust rumble I'm used to. Now, the best way to describe the difference between the 2 trucks.....the Ecoboost felt most powerful below 3500. The 5.0 doesn't feel like it starts to make power until 3000-3500 rpm. Having driven both, I can honestly say if I lined both up side by side, the Ecoboost would leave the 5.0 off the line like it was tied to a stump. However, in the second half of the rpm range, the 5.0 would be running the e coboost down. How long it would take to catch it, who knows. Both trucks were & are bad ***, you can't go wrong with either. Now as far as mods, just tune an Ecoboost nets you 50hp-75hp & 80tq-120tq. Not bad for $400. The 5.0, bolt a supercharger on for about $7K & get 650hp.....

Yeah, I agree, nothing better than an Ecoboost. Just, you know, minus the "eco" part.

I just bought a 2017 Lariat 5.0 and I am going to be installing a supercharger....I am struggling to understand which to go with...?

I just bolted a Magnuson onto my 6.2L 2015 Camaro and I love it! That said there was all kinds of info out there for forced induction on that motor but I am finding there is very little out there for the F150.

I want the performance but moreover I want reliability. Advice on selecting the right install would be appreciated...

I had an Mp112 on my Avalanche for 75k miles becore I got rid of it for my eco. Loved it, and never touched it after install. If I was doing the same for a 5.0 it would be a Whipple. You can have an easy 700 hp, and more is as easy as a pulley-down and minor retune, just like with a Magnacharger

I'm at about 30,000 miles on my whipple and it's been highly reliable so far. It's amazing, considering the power level. I know they've put a lot of effort into the calibration to keep it safe in extreme conditions. But I also give credit to ford for building us a ridiculously stout bottom end that holds the power. I haven't heard of a single whippled f-150 engine failure. I've only heard of one mustang 5.0 failure, which was making 100 more hp than us at 800 higher rpm and it broke an oil pump gear (hardly the fault of the supercharger).

No retune needed! The kit comes with a 2 bar map sensor so it senses the extra boost and adds fuel to match. It can see anything up to about 14.7 psi and I'm at about 13 now. I really think the engine can take more but whipple doesn't endorse it. I think they're being conservative because they want reliability in all situations (even sustained wot like towing a heavy camper up a mountain.)

I'm going to be doing the same and I'm all about the whipple. I have a 2.3 whipple PD blower on my 04 5.4 3v F150 and it honks ***! 60k miles on the blower to date, JDM tuned.
Power gains are all over yet it's still extremely street able, reliable and on demand power. You can drive it like it's a peppy stock motor or open it up like an instant raped ape..
I don't think there is a better mod than a PD supercharger and trust me, I have turbo cars too (2017 VW GTI) that I still love.. But for a truck, and a large displacement V8, supercharging is a very hard to beat mod. Turbos are nice, but they are almost always a labor of love and a chore to pull off.. Blower kit's bolt on in about 5 hours, and boost level increases are just a pulley swap away.

So with the Whipple, no tune is needed, just the 2 bar map sensor that comes with the kit? I am assuming though, a dyno tune would benefit greatly? Or not really?

With the whipple, unless things have changed, you can send them your ecm to flash or pay a little extra for the stuff to do it yourself with a laptop. Their calibrations will not work on an sct device because they change system-level stuff sct can't. The kit comes with everything you need except coolant and tools (you need a heat gun).

As far as aftermarket tunes go, most f-150 guys elect to keep the whipple tune because its powerful, safe, and emissions legal 50 state (if that matters to you). My supercharged 5.0 passes inspection no problem, whereas my tune-only 2011 eb had to be returned to stock to pass. Anyway, most mustang guys seem to stick with the whipple tune unless they convert to e85 or go crazy with the build. The only tune comparison I could fine was the one below, that shows a mild gain with an aftermarket tune. It's not worth the added risk to me.
