Default 5.0 or EcoBoost?

I am ready to pull the trigger on a new 2015 Platinum F150 and can't make up my mind about which engine to go with.

There are both in stock around here and both seem to perform well. The only thing I noticed with the 3.5 was when passing on the highway it didn't seem to have the same pull as the 5.0.

From the jump it was very fast. Mileage numbers seem to be about the same.

Anyone have over 100k trouble free miles on an ecoboost?

Any issues with the 5.0?

Thanks for the help....

TechRider, there are a dozen threads on this very topic already. You might want to use the SEARCH functionality.

I put 56K on a '12 Ecoboost. Largely troublefree, sure. But disappointing overall (for me). Others say different.

Just took delivery of my '15 Platinum last Friday. It's a 5.0L with the 3.55 locker.

I drove both before buying my 2013 and went with the EB. It drove and performed better hands down as far as I was concerned. No issues other than the funky smell from the heater which was eventually solved. I towed 10K from Denver to Seattle and it never missed a beat. Just traded it in on a 2015 EB. I test drove the V8 again just in case and was completely unimpressed. Ended up going with the EB again. I think the only reason to go V8 is if you have a sound fetish

3.5 vs. 5.0 is like cats and dogs.
3.5 seems to be a worker but is dependent on a lot of variables. Fuel mileage is everywhere depending a lot on how the truck is spec'd, so if you go with the 3.5 get lots of knowledge from forums on how to spec it out now on the front end if you are looking for desired results. It is extremely good at altitude vs. any other truck. The 3.5 comes in either 3.31 and 3.55 gears and can tow more than the 5.0.

5.0 is simpler, it shows more consistent mileage across the board. Most suggest going with 3.55 or 3.73 gears as the 6spd keeps the revs down good enough. It will not preform as well at altitude. It cannot tow as much, but it does have a larger payload than the 3.5.

Both are great choices. IMO The 3.5 may eventually cost more to maintain as it has Direct Injection and turbos to contend with, but since your buying a platinum I bet you will not be keeping the truck to the point this is an issue. Good Luck.

Wrong.

I went with the V8 because the 3.5 EB I put 56K flat highway miles on (85% of my driving) provided horrible gas mileage (15.9 mpg overall) AND because it started sputtering and stuttering every time I stepped on the gas @ 50 to 60 mph.

You can get a 3.5 EB with the 3.73 locker as well.

As far as towing and payload, nobody other than a few hardcore haulers will ever use their F150 to tow or haul anywhere NEAR the limits of either truck, so the EB vs. 5.0 comparison on these points is largely moot. And they've been driving 5.0s "at altitude" for a very long time, so no issue there.

I drove the Eco and 5.0 back to back before I bought my 2014 STX and ended up with the 5.0.I know the numbers/specs say differently but to me the 5.0 felt like it had more power. If I was towing then things may have been different for what I use my truck for the 5.0 was the obvious choice.I also have a 5.0 in my 2012 GT that I bought new in July 2011 and other then oil changes it’s never been back to the dealer.
