But...that old cliche doesn't make any sense at all in a comparison of two engines in which the significantly smaller engine outperforms the larger engine in virtually every metric by which you measure them.
IOW, there quite literally IS a replacement for displacement, and we're now at the point where the only logical reason to select the less powerful 5.0 is for the small savings in upfront cost.

Let's wait and see how the turbos hold up over 15 years, or more. That is how long I keep a vehicle. Which engines need more repairs? I think the turbos will be much more costly to keep running. But I have an open mind, let's see what happens. Maybe I'm wrong.

I tow quite a bit. I've got 9,500 miles on my 3.5 Ecoboost and over 4,000 have been pulling my 24' enclosed car trailer. The 5.0 just would not cut it for my use. I could care less about the noise it makes. I've got other vehicles that take care of that. Someone mentioned there is no replacement for displacement and that is where Ford loses to GM with the 6.2l that I would have bought IF GM could match the conveniences the King Ranch.

All these ridiculous "no replacement for displacement" comments. Well there is since the 3.5turbo has far more torque and hp is close to the same. With a tune - No contest. And if there is no replacement - why buy a small mustang v8 for a truck. The Hemi. Toyota. Chevy all have bigger displacement... In fact 6.2 minus 5.0 = 1.2 liter diff. 5.0 less 3.5 = 1.5 liter difference. Yet the 3.5 had 2 turbos... lol
Anyways. OP - if you don't want the extra power of the 3.5 then no worries, the 5.0 can do the job. The lower price may help. If you like quickness, towing power then you will regret getting the very small v8. If you re a traditionalist, you will always regret not getting 8 cylinders in your truck.

I went with the 5.0 and now with the total redesign of the 3.5 EB I'm sure I went with the right engine -- for me. Do your research, test drive units with the same rear end gearing and really think about what you want and need. Don't let a salesperson push you into a vehicle that you might be sorry for. My dealer pulled up trucks similar to what I wanted from around the region, but they either lacked features (such as color and tow mirrors) or had features I didn't want (such as panoramic roof, 20 inch wheels). Over their attempts to sell me one of these trucks, I ordered what I wanted, in the color I wanted, and waited for delivery.
Several locals who bought new F-150's have looked at the truck, asked how it is set up and then asked how I found it. When told I ordered virtually all have said they love their trucks BUT it's not exactly what they really wanted and they should have ordered. I asked all why they bought off the lot and to the person they said they went in to buy a truck and the salesman showed them something close and they bought them.
Design the truck the way you want/need and order it. Get the engine/gear combination you want, the packages you want, the color you want. Order it. You will be happier in the long run.
And enjoy whatever you purchase.

I had a 2014 with the 5.0 and it towed my travel trailer in 3rd and 4th gear. It was a miserable experience with the magnaflow exhaust. I traded it for a 2015 3.5 EcoBoost. My towing experience was night and day. The EcoBoost pulls with ease and stays in 5th the majority of the time. Plus it's whisper quiet. Love that. It's also considerably faster than my old 5.0 was. Plus it's my daily driver and the fuel economy over the 5.0 is so much better unloaded. It's about the same towing I'd say. Maybe a tick better. There are a couple threads on here about the 5.0 mpg you should check out. This is IMO having owned both versions very recently. In fact I bought a bigger heaver travel trailer yesterday due to my increased capacity. Proof is in the pudding they say and a picture is worth a 1000 words. Best of luck either way. The 5.0 is stout but the 3.5 EcoBoost was better for me and what I needed a truck for.
