Same issue here as experienced by Scott in earlier posts. On the beach this weekend got stuck 4 times, 2 times I wasn't even stuck (meaning I didn't allow wheels to keep turning as soon as I felt 4WD gone). While truck was in 4WD, as soon as back would start loosing the slightest bit of traction, "4WD Temporarily Disabled" which would disengage the front wheels sticking me in 2WD. Unlike Scott (based on his pictures), I didn't pull my 4WD **** to lock rear differential as 2016 model doesn't have "Pull" under the icon next to the ****, nor is this referenced in the manual. I wasn't aware of this feature until researching it but am not certain that would have improved the condition as at the end of the day, 4WD was getting disengaged at single tire slippage. I made my appointment at the dealership this morning for their review. I am still under warranty, but in March had my truck lifted to 4" so not sure if they are going to honor warranty b/c of that modification.

Thanks in advance for any advice and will assume any snarky responses by my inexperience with locking differential.

A lift wouldn’t affect the way your 4wd worked. Even larger tires wouldn’t affect it much either. People have been and are running 37s and bigger no problem with their 4wd. It seems to me all of the issues are with trucks that had the 4A feature.

I went to 3 different dealerships 8 times, and the last 2 times they did software updates. But I think the first dealership the week before was not being honest, I dont think they updated or did much of anything other than look for codes and tell me they cant reproduce the issue. I'm not sure the truck would have major updates 1 week apart. So I took it back to the dealership I trusted the most out of all 3 and they told me they updated everything as well, but I was non-trusting at this point. But this time I could actually tell that a software update was done, and the truck seemed a little more responsive. If you check out my same video at (at 6:20 of the video)
, you will see that the incline decline angle was all over the place when I revved the engine and wasn't moving. This is now working perfectly, like it never did before and there are a few options that changed in the menus. I think it fixed the 4wd, because I couldn't get it to fail this past weekend after 3 hours of going through thick sand. But I'm going to check it again before getting too excited. The dealership had also asked me to put the stock wheels back on, which I did. So now I will switch back to the 35 inch wheels and try it again in the sand and make sure it still works and wasn't a fluke. I'm 75-90% sure the 4wd is fixed. If it is fixed, Ill go back to the dealership and try and learn more about the exact updates to pass on the information.

Now that is strange as hell. Ya if you could figure out what updates they made to the 4wd that’d be awesome. That way I don’t have to have the dealership ripping parts of my truck open that are fine.

Glad to hear Scott had some success. Definitely interested to hear results when you go back to 35s. Although they recommend switching back to stock tires, it’s ironic because some Ford dealers around my parts are selling them (marked up of course) with lifts and 33-35” tires new. But most of them will only see the street anyway and might use 4WD in snow.

Software updates sounds like an interesting solution since it seems like the computer is what is failing by releasing 4WD from front when a single back tire is detected of slipping (at least in my case at the beach).

Thanks again for providing us your results. Fingers crossed for you bro that 35s are fine. Btw- what tire are you running Scott? I thought from your video they were BFG ATs. I am running Nitto Ridge Grapplers which are a bit more heavy than the ATs and were my choice but I allowed myself to fall for the Nittos with some sales talk.

Baja5.0 - I agree on the lift and tires, especially when Ford is selling that way as well. I was figuring this would be the first thing the dealer would cite as an issue since they didn't do my work. I like the 4A feature being a common denomiator for our troubles. Hopefully Scott is onto something with the dealer software update.

The 34.5 inch tires I’m running are the rims and tires off of a 2017-2018 Raptor. You are correct they are BFGoodrich Alterains KO2s. My situation was very surprising as I didn’t expect the 4wd to be any different after the update, but I started to think it might be possible after verifying it was actually done. I’m going out of town for 2 weeks, but when I get back I will try out the larger tires in the sand and verify that the 4wd is truly fixed. And I will give an update

Ya the tires ain't the issue. I personally run 37s daily no issue, and many of my friends do too. One thing is they don't have 4A.
