"4x4 Temporarily Disabled"

Yes, if you are seeing signs like mud that high, I’d definitely take a look at the front and rear diff fluids. May even change them regardless.
If you think they didn’t do any maintenance, I’d look up what the truck needs for maintenance at the current mileage and start doing them.

Read the DTCs, that may tell you something a little more definitive. Even if the CEL isn't on, there's likely codes stored.
Did you not test-drive the vehicle before purchasing?

I just shifted into 4Auto at 5mph no acceleration, it read shift in progress and then a loud metal on metal bang. I've read other members say there's does that and they think it's normal, but that def doesn't sound normal.

If I shift from 2H to 4A or 4H at any speed, I just take my foot off the accelerator and coast for a second or two while the shifting in progress is displayed on the info cluster. I never hear a noise from the TC. Only time I hear the TC is shifting from 4H to 4L, which I only do with the truck stopped and N. Although I don't use 4L very often, I try to engage it once a month. I didn't do this often enough on my old Sport Trac and it would take forever to engage and/or disengage 4L.

There are no codes on or stored. Of course I test drove the vehicle but I didn't take it through mud or snow to make sure the 4x4 doesn't disable. I test drove it for probably 40 miles and tested everything, I couldn't see inside the little frame holes where all the packed mud and dirt are until I got it home and was messing around with it. The truck was running fine for a week after purchasing. I'm sure the dealer or affiliated shop cleared all codes on it.

Could it be a bad sensor? If the message typically indicates overheat, but it's happening just after engaging, it may be a sensor that is fouled up or just bad, possibly due to whatever the previous owner was doing with it. If they were taking it through mud and then started seeing this message the next time they went to use 4x4, could have just dumped it on the first dealer that would buy it. May have an easy solution though if its just a sensor.

I don't care what Ford tell you, I still treat it like an old stick 4wd. I slow down below 5mph and put it in 4wd. Same for going back to 2wd. If I had 4A I would do the same.

I did have an issue with my IWE's at about 7K miles but we found out the entire front differential cratered and it was not the IWE's fault. I have heard of others where the 4wd valve (don't know the actual name) get stuck and can cause similar problems.
At any rate it is NOt RIGHT. :-) Sorry.
