Default 4D Tech Sync 2 MFT w/Navigation to Sync 3 w/Navigation Upgrade

After considering all the options to upgrade from Sync 2 MFT w/Navigation to Sync 3 w/Navigation, I opted to go the 4D Tech route.

4D Tech answered all my Sales and Tech Support questions prior to purchasing. Placed the order on Monday before 3 PM and the order arrived 2 days later without any additional charge for FedEX Ground shipping. After watching the
installation went seamlessly (well almost **). After allowing approx. 4 to 5 minutes for the maps to load on initial startup all seems to be working well.

After the installation I used FORScan to check for DTCs as I was sure there were going to be some. Surprisingly there was only 1 DTC B119F:13 - GPS Antenna - Open Circuit (Malfunction Indicator Lamp is off for this DTC) in the APIM which can not be cleared. I am assuming this is because 4D Tech uses a standalone GPS antenna rather than the Sync 3 combination Satellite Radio/GPS antenna. Display was programmed using my original VIN#. I have all the correct features for my VIN (which is also displayed) on the Sync 3 menu. Shipped with Sync 3 v2.3 as this is the current official release from Ford. All functions appear to be working correctly, even the optional Raptor splash screen.

**Word of advice: make absolutely certain you have a T8 Torx screwdriver or bit to exchange the side brackets from the Sync 2 to Sync 3 display.

My next project will be upgrading the ACM to HD Radio.

You shouldn’t get any dtc for the gps factory or external antenna. Does the nav show a gps circle with a line through it after about 10 minutes?

Hasn't yet but I probably have only had the system running 2 or 3 times for no more than 10 minutes at a time.

Does the compass work in the IPC, when I went from the 4.2 screen to Sync 3 I had a DTC for the antenna. The old antenna gets disconnected if I remember right. I ended up hooking it back up, so 2 antennas now.

That DTC is most likely from the GPS antenna you recieved... they usually have a specific voltage and/or resistance rating. If it is out of Spec for Sync 3, it will generate that error.

Yes the compass on the IPC still works. That being said, I still have the Sync 2 GPSM connected. I specifically asked 4D Tech if I should leave it connected and their response was "you can leave the old GPS module connected". Therefore I have both the OEM Sync 2 GPSM and the Sync 3 GPSM supplied by 4D Tech connected.

I sent 4D Tech's Tech Support an email asking about the DTC. Their response was "You should not have a DTC for GPS open (or shorted)." They are shipping me a replacement GPS antenna. Concerning the specs on the GPS antenna I snapped these photos before installing the GPS antenna

I wanted to follow up and post the resolution for the DTC in the APIM. Looks like DanMc85's assessment of my problem with the DTC was spot on. 4D Tech also confirmed the DTC was caused by too little resistance in the GPS antenna as a result of the shortened antenna cable.

I installed the replacement 4D Tech GPS antenna. Rather than a short 3' antenna cable as the original 4D Tech GPS antenna had, the replacement GPS antenna although identical in appearance, has much a longer (probably 10'+) antenna cable. I also took this opportunity to upgrade the ACM to 4D Tech's HD Radio. I should mention that with the
Craven Speed stubby antenna Craven Speed stubby antenna
due to poor reception in my area, I wasn't able to receive any HD Programing. However as soon as I reverted back to the OEM antenna, that I had previously modified (shortened) to the same height of the cab roofline, I was able to receive all HD Programming listed as being available in my listening area.

All functions of Sync 3 and HD Radio appear to be working correctly without any DTCs.

The images below are after installation of HD Radio and the replacement GPS antenna.

So that was the question I couldn't get figured out the other day... the Sync 2 w/ MFT to Sync 3 upgrade package that 4D offers doesn't include HD radio?

I was already having a hard time with $1500 for the update... but $600 more to get HD radio?
