Several have done it, including myself, without an issue. It's a Ford OE harness. You simply remove the 4-pin harness and install the 7-pin. My truck was already pre-wired for the factory controller, as I believe all of them are. I just removed the pocket from the dash that had the factory harness connected to, connected the harness to the factory in-dash controller and then used the factory trailer plug on the bumper and plugged the 7-pin harness into that. Only thing you'll need to do is go to a dealer for them to unlock the towing options or purchase a scanner and download the Forscan program to do it yourself.
There are several you tube videos showing how to install the OE brake controller when not an original option...not to difficult looking but must be enabled by dealer or someone with mentioned software,

I suspect ExpresswayFord has that option covered...

I converted from the factory 4 pin to the factory 4/7 pin with the factory integrated brake controller on my 2015 f150 xlt using the following parts:

4/7 pin jack - FU5Z14489A
tow harness - FL3Z13A576B
brake controller - FL3Z-19H332-AB

I opted to dremel the bumper cover rather then replace. My local delear charged me $85 to enable it. I was worried about voiding my warrenty with forscan.

The same dealer I had enable it also told me that I couldn't switch to the 4/7 pin and add the integrated brake controller without the truck coming factory installed with the max tow package.

Mine works fine with the factory brake controller. I actually have all the fancy trailer options in my lariat cluster that I installed as well. Not bad for a truck that didn't come with a towing package.

Another successful install!

We used the updated 4/7 pin harness HL3Z-13A576-B and FU5Z-14489-A plug, and cut a hole in the bumper cover to mount it. Also installed FL3Z-19H332-AB brake controller. Worked like a charm.

Pretty disappointing that Ford tells us dealers that it can't be done. Don't get upset if your local dealer tells you the same, they're just going off the information that they've been provided. But this seems to work!

When we go to the dealer to have the controller enabled what should we say or ask for specifically especially if they are unaware?

Just tell them you installed the Ford brake controller and need it activated with IDS. They'll know what you mean by that.

Is there anyway to tell if its prewired from the back without taking the dash apart? I'm going to be installing a sync3 system and would rather know before hand so i can order the parts needed and do it all at once

I just bought a 2016 F150 and came here looking for a little guidance. My truck did not come with a hitch and only had the factory 4 pin in the back.

I wanted this all to look factory so opted to go with a factory Ford hitch instead of adding an aftermarket hitch to my bumper bracket. I got the 7pin/4pin plug and the new wiring harness to go with it.

I have a few questions about the order in which I am to change this stuff out.

1. Because I am changing the entire hitch bracket (and not just adding a hitch to the existing bracket) I know I need to unplug the existing 4pin but do I need to take the old wiring harness completely off before I remove the bracket/bumper assembly?

2. I don't see any markings on the new wiring harness to indicate which plugs go where. It seems that this part should be self explanatory because of the length of the whips but I don't want to get in a pickle trying to do this myself.

Once I get this hitch and wiring changed out, I am going to get the local dealership to add the factory brake controller and program it. I don't feel comfortable going into the dash on my new truck and I certainly need them to program it anyway.
