3rd break light melting
I was out washing my truck today and noticed that the plastic area around each reverse light is melting. Anyone else notice this? They are the stock bulbs.

Yes it was an issue starting in 2015 I think there was a TSB and the dealer changed the bulbs to LED. I changed my own on the 2015 when I saw it.

It sometimes happens from the heat from the incandescent bulbs. You have to be careful cause the brake light has a seal on that and if that's melted....it can start leaking into the back of the cab through the headliner.
Either replace the housing and switch to LED bulbs OR since you have to get a new housing anyhow, get the Ford OEM LED Third Brake Light used in the higher trim levels...which dosent have bulbs at all....its plug and play except for trimming a tab off the electrical connector to plug into the truck connector.....google it. They look so much better than the regular ones. |
Interesting I'll look into getting led bulbs first and see if that reduces the melting from spreading.

If the truck is still under warranty, get a new housing from the dealer, then put LED bulbs in the new housing before it can melt again.

I will go and check my 2016 once the snow melts off of the top of it. Have a canopy, so the light isn't very visible without a step up. Also, the light is useless with a canopy, and I wish that there was some way to disable it without pulling the canopy and breaking the light's seal in removing the bulbs. For all I know, taking out the bulbs might trigger some warning in the system.

I have a 6 months old 17 and i can see slighty hazing above the bulbs on mine... so i'd say all of you should go check.
Also what is the bulb size to replace those things. If i replace it now i don't think i'll need a new housing. |
